Though former Vice President Joe Biden boasts the highest chances of defeating President Donald Trump in the 2020 general election, according to polls, everybody on the left seems committed to preventing his nomination, including Sen. Cory Booker.
Granted, Booker is competing against Biden for that nomination, but still …
Only a week after the New Jersey senator joined the far-left in smearing the former VP over remarks he’d made about remaining civil and working with those with whom he disagrees ideologically, Booker doubled down on his attacks by dinging Biden for his latest alleged gaffe.
While speaking at Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Push Coalition in Chicago on Friday, Biden made a remark that appeared to be in reference to Trayvon Martin, a thuggish youth from Florida who’d been justifiably shot and killed by a neighborhood community watch member in 2012.
Listen:
During the altercation in February of 2012, local community watch member George Zimmerman observed Martin walking around suspiciously in a hoodie. When Zimmerman confronted him to see whether he was up to no good, Martin attacked him. In the physical melee that followed, the 17-year-old teen wound up dead.
But despite Zimmerman, a Hispanic man, subsequently being acquitted for the murder on the grounds that Martin had attacked him, the left have transformed the kid into a hero and martyr because of his race and because of his hoodie. Biden appeared to be tapping into this Friday.
“We need to make sure that black mothers feel confident when they send their son out on the street that they will feel safe,” he said during his speech. “We’ve got to recognize that kid wearing a hoodie may very well be a poet laureate, and not a gang banger.”
FYI, for better or worse, Zimmerman had thought Martin was a possible gangbanger. This isn’t to suggest that his actions had been. According to the courts, they hadn’t.
Nevertheless, Biden clearly tried to tap into the events of 2012 on Friday to appeal to the racial grievance mongers on the left. But instead of embracing his rhetoric positively — which would be expected given that he’s buying into their false narrative about a racist America and racist criminal justice system — the left, led by Booker, chose to turn on him.
“This isn’t about a hoodie,” the New Jersey senator tweeted in anger Friday evening. “It’s about a culture that sees a problem with a kid wearing a hoodie in the first place. Our nominee needs to have the language to talk about race in a far more constructive way.”

Some blue check mark leftists joined his outrage bandwagon:
I was at a place with TVs for lunch when Biden said “a kid in a hoodie may be the next poet laureate and not a gang banger” and several folks in the room watching, myself included, simultaneously went “Oh no…”

Joe Biden just inflicted more pain on his candidacy by trying to undo the debate damage https://t.co/wp26Yxr9Q1 via @qz

Um….
Biden in speech just now trying to recover his racial justice champ chops: “We have to recognize that kid wearing the hoodie, may very well be the next poet laureate, and not a gangbanger.”
It’s the way he says it…— Sebastian Smith (@SebastianAFP) June 28, 2019
Dear Biden, What if that kid wants to be a poet and a gangbanger? Like, a poet gangbanger? Is that ok? Asking for a friend.

I had to watch it to make sure that the quote was real.
I watched it and the quote is real.
And the scariest part is he has no awareness about how deeply damaging & wrongheaded this view & these words are.
He’s just so matter-of-fact racist. https://t.co/H2sV2r25q2

One of the blue check mark leftists mentioned Biden’s “debate damage.” During the second Democrat presidential primary debate Thursday evening, 2020 contender Sen. Kamala Harris excoriated Biden over his otherwise exemplary record on civil rights for blacks. Liberal elites believe these attacks damaged the former VP’s chances. It’s unclear whether that’s true.
If anything, Booker and Harris’s relentless attacks on Biden may be backfiring on them. If you pull up the New Jersey senator’s tweet, you’ll find that the vast majority of people are pushing back on his attack by pointing out that the point he’d made about “a culture that sees a problem with a kid wearing a hoodie in the first place” was the exact one that Biden had made.
Look:
I believe he was trying to say police & racist people shouldn’t see a kid in a hoodie as someone to target. Basically, the same thing you are saying. Trying to pick @JoeBiden Biden apart?
— OMAPROUD (@OMAPROUD) June 29, 2019
Uhhh, that is quite literally Joe’s point.
— Nunca Trump (@NeverTrumpTexan) June 29, 2019
Cory, this is a purposeful attempt to twist @JoeBiden ‘s words…you are barking up the wrong tree trying to denegrate his work for civil rights! Please find a different way to elevate yourself.

I was one of your biggest fans but enough with the bashing! We don’t want it anymore we get enough from Trump! You and @KamalaHarris need to stop! It’s not flattering at all

I am not a Biden fan but there is nothing wrong with his comment. You’re making yourself look desperate. Critique him on something legitimate.

The Left: I can’t believe how racist the U.S. is
Joe Biden: Hey, maybe don’t look at every kid in a hoodie as a gangbanger. The truth is we have too many black men and women in prison.
The Left: ZOMG cAn YoU bElIeVE hOw RaCiSt JoE bIdEn Is????
— Cam Edwards (@CamEdwards) June 28, 2019
You’re grasping for a way to criticize Joe. You are determined to go after him, whatever he says.

The accusation that Booker is desperate does fit, given that his poll numbers are a joke:
Percentage of Dems or D-leaning independents who say a 2020 candidate should DROP OUT in a new Suffolk poll.
Bill de Blasio 42%
Bernie Sanders 35%
Kirsten Gillibrand 27%
Cory Booker 27%
Beto O’Rourke 25%
Julian Castro 24%
Tulsi Gabbard 23%
Elizabeth Warren 23%
John Delaney 23%— Kevin Robillard (@Robillard) June 20, 2019

First full measure of Biden’s remarks on civility:
After a week of Dems, MSNBC and CNN demanding apologies from Biden… he gains 3pts in early primary states over last week’s Morning Consult poll. @CoryBooker gains nothing. https://t.co/0Be2K3qreV pic.twitter.com/kTXjoZi4Pk
