During a press conference at the 2019 G20 Osaka summit in Japan on Saturday, President Donald Trump pointed out that the impatient asylum seeker who’d recently drowned to death in the Rio Grande river along with his young daughter while trying to cross into the U.S. illegally would likely still be alive today had there been a border wall to stop their progress.
“If we had walls up and if we had it hard, the father and the beautiful daughter who drowned … if they thought it was hard to get in, they wouldn’t be coming up,” he reportedly said. “So many lives would be saved.”

This week members of the radical left, including congressional Democrats, began sharing a photo that showed the dead bodies of the father, Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez, and his 23-month-old daughter, Valeria, and using the photo to score more points against the president and further demonize his tough but arguably sensible and defensible immigration policies:

Trump is responsible for these deaths. https://t.co/UZirFjh3fm

These families seeking asylum are often fleeing extreme violence. And what happens when they arrive? Trump says, ‘Go back to where you came from.’ That is inhumane. Children are dying. This is a stain on our moral conscience. https://t.co/NHly7QTiAq

We should not look away. These are the consequences of Donald Trump’s inhumane and immoral immigration policy. This is being done in our name. https://t.co/mZQnREOjV0

Word later emerged that Ramírez wasn’t as innocent as the left had suggested. Instead of seeking asylum so as to escape violence, he’d been seeking asylum for economic reasons, as reported by The New York Times. This means he’d likely have been denied asylum had he waited, given as asylum is designed to protect those escaping violence.
But Ramirez chose not to wait, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli.
“The reason we have tragedies like that on the border is because those folks, that father didn’t want to wait to go through the asylum process in the legal fashion, so decided to cross the river,” he said during an appearance Thursday on CNN.
Reuters has confirmed that this is true: “Exasperated by the wait to apply for asylum, Martinez and Angie Valeria attempted to swim to U.S. soil on Sunday, an immigration official in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas said.”
Every asylum seeker has to wait for his or her turn. Ramirez chose not to wait, and because of that decision, he and his daughter lost their lives, sadly.
“New York Times is reporting this morning that relatives say that Martínez and his family was not fleeing violence at home, and therefore it’s likely that their asylum claim would have been denied, which is true in both the Trump and Obama administrations…”
But Narrative

The president also mentioned the wait during his speech Saturday.
“You have millions of people on line for years to get into a country,” he said. “They take tests, they study … and these people have worked hard, they’ve been on line for seven, eight, nine years, then someone walks in. Honestly it’s very unfair.”
But the more pressing point, he continued, is that Ramirez and his daughter wouldn’t have even had the opportunity to try sneaking into the U.S. had there been a wall to block their passage. The facts bear this point out as well.
Then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen confirmed as much last October, saying during a press conference, “Let me be clear: Walls work, it’s not my opinion. It’s not a tag line. It’s not a political statement. It’s a fact.”
A fact backed by mounds of evidence:
- “Some 560,000 illegals were caught astride San Diego and Tijuana in Fiscal Year 1992, when a border wall was installed there. By FY 2017, the Border Patrol says it snared 26,086 — down 95.3 percent.” (Deroy Murdock via National Review)
- “Consider Turkey, Hungary and Israel, which experienced dramatic reductions in illegal crossings since building walls. Israel’s illegal crossings, because of the wall and other policies, dropped by 99 percent!” (Rep. Matt Gaetz via USA Today)
- “Effective border walls are built around the world. Here’s a video mashup to show your liberal friends“
- “Will Trump’s wall work? This chart has the answer and libs are not going to like it“
- “Texas border patrol says 96% of migrant traffic happens where there’s no fencing: ‘Come walk in my shoes,’ Dems.”
Yet despite the facts backing what Trump said, the left has responded with its usual dose of irrational and factually inaccurate outrage:
It is the threat of a wall, @realDonaldTrump, that is forcing people to rush the border.
It’s akin to raising the drawbridge at the castle as the peasants from town are crossing it for safety.
They are bound to fall in the moat.

That is not justification for trump’s racist wall.

No they would have survived had when they arrived at that bridge they were processed as a family correctly seeking asylum. Instead the bridge was closed by direction of Trumps regime. Own their deaths Donnie….

Sure, forget about how they would have been saved if it wasn’t for blocking them from an asylum request.
