MSNBC opinion host Donny Deutsch, who despises President Donald Trump, is worried that none of the 2020 Democratic candidates who participated in last night’s debate could beat Trump.
“My issue, unfortunately — and do not shoot the messenger — is I do not believe Elizabeth Warren on stage with Donald Trump beats him,” Deutsch said. “And I think if we’re honest with ourselves, I think a lot of people agree with me.”
These were the Democrats who debated on Day 1 of the Democratic debates:
- Senator Elizabeth Warren
- Senator Cory Booker
- Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke
- Senator Amy Klobuchar
- Former HUD Secretary Julián Castro
- Washington Gov. Jay Inslee
- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio
- Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard
- Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan
- Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney.
Donny Deutsch: Most Americans are turned off by socialism
Specifically, Deutsch suggested that the hard-left positions the Democratic Party has adopted — including its open embrace of socialism — will alienate millions of Americans. Most Americans are politically moderate and are not far-left or far-right.
“I also think when you can label somebody a socialist, 57% of this country thinks that word is un-American,” Deutsch remarked. “I’m not saying it’s fair. When [Trump] can blanket Elizabeth Warren as a socialist and he’s on stage with her, the Democrats lose.”
Deutsch added: “I think [Warren is] delightful, I think she’s wonderful. I’m a big fan. I just don’t think she has what it takes to beat this president, the same way at least an idealized version of Joe Biden is. Don’t shoot the messenger. It’s just facts. We’ve got to get Trump out.”

Lawrence O’Donnell: Deutsch’s observations have ‘zero value’
When pressed, Deutsch says maybe “an idealized version of Joe Biden” could beat Trump in a debate. But for now, he believes that none of the contenders who are on the debate stage last night could beat Trump.
In response, MSNBC opinion host Lawrence O’Donnell fired back, saying he believes Donny Deutsch’s comments have “zero value.”
“Let’s just identify this for what it is: pure guesswork a year-and-a-half away,” O’Donnell said. “Donny’s [opinions right now] I say, this respectfully, [have] zero value.”
Deutsch shot back: “Don’t tell me it has zero value! It’s understanding human behavior. And I guarantee you 90% of our audience agrees with me.”
O’Donnell dismissed Deutsch’s rebuttals as speculation. “It’s a wild guess, there’s no science in it, there’s nothing in it,” O’Donnell retorted. “You can put any name you want in the wild guess you just made and it doesn’t make it true.”
Deutsch quipped: “I’m understanding Donald Trump — the way he’s connecting with this country and the strength he exudes. We need to exude a stronger strength. It’s not a policy discussion.”
Flashback: O’Donnell bullied crew in unhinged meltdown
Deutsch should be careful to not anger Lawrence O’Donnell, who has a fiery temper. As BizPac Review reported, O’Donnell famously had an unhinged meltdown on his MNSBC show in 2017 because of ambient noise.
In the profanity-laced, 8-minute video, O’Donnell screams at his staff about a malfunctioning earpiece and hammering noises coming from outside the control room.
“Stop the hammering! Stop the hammering out there!” O’Donnell shouts to his crew. “Who’s got a hammer? Where is it? Where’s the hammer? Go up on the other floor! Somebody go up there and stop the hammering! Stop the hammering! I’ll go down to the g-ddamned floor myself and stop it!”
O’Donnell then demanded that his staff call MSNBC president Phil Griffin to stop the noise, which the crew has no control over. The hammering noises also appeared to be coming from a different floor, so it’s not like the crew could have done anything about it.
“Call f-cking Phil Griffin! I don’t care who you have to call!” O’Donnell yells. “Stop the hammering! Empty out the g-ddamned control room and find out where this is going on!”
