During the first Democrat presidential primary debate Wednesday evening, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio appeared to trash-talk the police again …
During a rant on gun crimes, he argued that “to stop the shootings and get these guns off the streets,” the police need to change their relationship with the communities they patrol.
Especially the black communities they patrol. To bolster this point, the mayor described how he’s raised his black son, Dante, to essentially be afraid of the racist police.

“I’ve been raising a black son in America, and I have had to have very, very serious talks with my son, Dante, about how to protect himself on the streets of our city and all over this country, including how to deal with the fact he has to take special caution because there have been too many tragedies between our young men and our police, too, as we saw recently in Indiana,” he said.
Earlier this month in South Bend, Indiana, the hometown of fellow presidential candidate Pete Buttgieg, local officers shot and killed a black man who’d been armed with a knife. Though all the evidence points to the shooting being justified, racial grievance mongers have cited the shooting as another example of the racism allegedly endemic to American’s criminal justice system.
“So we need to have a different conversation in this country about guns, but also a different conversation about policing that brings police and community together,” de Blasio continued. “We’ve done that in New York City and we’ve driven down crime while we’ve done it.”
He doubled down on this point via Twitter:
If we’re going to address gun violence, we need to have a conversation about policing. I know how important it is to build relationships between police and community. We did that in New York City and have driven crime down to the lowest numbers in our history. #DemDebate

And in response, local New York City police officers pounced.
In a series of scathing tweets, the New York City Police Benevolent Association excoriated the mayor for, one, talking the talk but never walking the walk, and two, being so divisive:

NYC PBA President Patrick J. Lynch was even more scathing.
“Mayor de Blasio has apparently learned nothing over the past six years about the extremely damaging impact of anti-police rhetoric on both cops and the communities we serve,” he said in a statement.
The hostile and dangerous environment we now face on the street is a direct result of the demonization of cops by de Blasio and other elected officials. By rolling out that rhetoric again on a national stage, it’s clear he wants to take the country down the same path.”

The amount of disrespect de Blasio has shown the NYPD is almost immeasurable. The disrespect began around the time of Mike Brown and Eric Garner’s deaths.
Because of the anti-cop movement that spawned as a result of Brown’s justified shooting and Garner’s accidental death — and that the mayor enthusiastically adopted — local officers blamed the murder of two police officers in December of 2014 on him.
“After officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were shot and killed Saturday afternoon in an unprovoked attack, cops and union leaders publicly rebuked Mayor Bill de Blasio, arguing his earlier remarks had stoked anti-police sentiment,” Time magazine reported at the time.
“That night, officers turned their backs on the mayor as he walked through the Brooklyn hospital where the officers were taken.”
This tactic of expressing their displeasure with him by turning their backs wound up becoming a trend:

The mayor has also been criticized for making the police’s job significantly more difficult by eliminating Stop ‘n Frisk and transforming NYC into a sanctuary city.
Fast-forwarding back to the present, local officers were already so disenchanted with de Blasio’s policies that they reportedly followed him to the debate and protested outside the debate venue.
According to Reason magazine, they also “bought a digital ad displayed on a truck, as well as a full-page ad in The Miami Herald declaring that de Blasio ‘puts WORKING PEOPLE LAST.'”

But the mayor has shown no interest in rethinking his policies or his rhetoric. Like most Democrats, he’s confident to the point of arrogance in his failed policies.
