Former special counsel Robert Mueller has agreed to testify before Congress after being subpoenaed by both the House Judiciary and House Intelligence committees.
The subpoenas were issued Tuesday night for Mueller to appear at an open session on July 17 — ensuring Democrats get the media circus they desire.
Intent on rehashing the Mueller’s investigation ad nauseam, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif, chairman of the Intelligence Committee, released a joint statement on Mueller’s appearance.
“Americans have demanded to hear directly from the special counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined, uncovered, and determined about Russia’s attack on our democracy, the Trump campaign’s acceptance and use of that help, and President Trump and his associates’ obstruction of the investigation into that attack,” the chairmen said, according to Roll Call. “We look forward to hearing his testimony, as do all Americans.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” to say the Democrats’ stunt will “blow up in their face.”
When Mueller made his one and only public statement on his final report, he stated then that his report on the Russia investigation was his testimony, and Graham said Mueller’s testimony won’t be any different that what is in that report.
The senator also envisioned some of the questions Mueller will likely be asked — by Republicans, of course.
“Bottom line is, after all of your looking and all the time you had and all the money you spent, did Trump collude with the Russians? No – Do you stand by your report? – Yes,” Graham said.
“It is ‘case-closed’ for me,” he added, making it clear that there’ll be no dog and pony in the Senate. “They can do anything they want to in the House, and I think it will blow up in their face.”
Host Sean Hannity threw out other potential questions for Mueller, like how do you justify hiring Hillary Clinton’s attorney and hiring only Democrat attorneys.
“It will blow up in their face. This will blow up in their face,” Graham repeated. “The conclusions can’t change, there is no collusion, that’s what the whole thing was about to begin with.”
As for alleged obstruction, Graham noted that Trump gave 1.4 million documents to Mueller and let former White House counsel Don McGahn to testified for 30 hours.
“[Trump] made everybody available to Mueller that Mueller wanted to talk to and he answered questions in writing — so this president did nothing to stop Mueller from finding the truth.”
As for media coverage, Fox News’ Capitol Hill senior producer Chad Pergram said the reporting on Mueller’s appearance will “dwarf” anything seen in past congressional hearings linked to the Russia investigation.
“We’ve had some explosive hearings on Capitol Hill before,” he told Hannity. “You think of James Comey testifying, Jeff Sessions in the Senate a couple of years ago. You think about Michael Cohen in February. This will dwarf that. The pure magnitude of this will be off the Richter scale.”
Pergram said the subpoenas were “friendly,” and shared details of the agreement.
“I’m told Bob Mueller would only appear if he was subpoenaed, and will stick to the ‘four corners’ of his report,” he said. “That’s what he said in a statement several weeks ago when they released the report. Of course, you can imagine Democrats wanting to get at him and see if there was distance between him and William Barr, the attorney general.”
