Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continued the battle of words with Rep. Liz Cheney by turning her concentration camp narrative upside down.
The Democratic socialist lawmaker, who has been battling it out with Cheney since she alleged that the U.S. is running concentration camps on the southern border, raised eyebrows with her latest effort at defending herself when she claimed it was the Wyoming Republican who fueled the fire.
Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter Monday to claim Cheney was the one who “directly and explicitly” compared U.S. detention facilities along the southern border to the Holocaust and not herself.
Reminder: the member who directly + explicitly compared concentration camps on our border to the Holocaust was *Liz Cheney.*
The horrors of the Holocaust went beyond the use of concentration camps, yet camps were part of the process.
They have also been used before and after.

She linked back to Cheney’s original tweet in a follow-up post and argued that Republicans made the “wild jump” as a plan for “eliciting + manipulating pain for political purposes.”

Anyone willing to review the timeline of the controversy would likely be confused by Ocasio-Cortez claiming Cheney is responsible for remarks that she herself made. The freshman New York congresswoman sparked fiery backlash last week after making the false claim that detention facilities operated by the U.S. on the southern border are like concentration camps.
“The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are — they are concentration camps,” she said in an Instagram Live video last week that ignited the controversy.
“I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘never again’ means something,” she added, using the phrase that is a reference to the Holocaust. “The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the ‘Home of the Free’ is extraordinarily disturbing, and we need to do something about it.”
Her comments set off days of follow-up exchanges debating the inaccuracy of her claims and the controversial argument over the difference between “concentration camps” and “death camps.”
“Please @AOC do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history,” Cheney tweeted in response, linking the Democrat’s video. “Six million Jews were exterminated in the Holocaust. You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this.”

“Hey Rep. Cheney, since you’re so eager to ‘educate me,’ I’m curious: What do YOU call building mass camps of people being detained without a trial?” Ocasio-Cortez fired back at the Republican, never apologizing for her own remarks.
She continued her attack on Cheney in interviews and subsequent comments.

The 29-year-old socialist turned her wrath on Rep. Steve King as well in a blistering tweet after the Iowa Republican urged her to take up an offer to tour Auschwitz.

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum had joined the many other voices loudly condemning Ocasio-Cortez’s original comments, which she claims Cheney made.
“The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum unequivocally rejects efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events, whether historical or contemporary,” the museum said in a statement Monday, the New York Post reported. “That position has repeatedly and unambiguously been made clear in the Museum’s official statement on the matter – a statement that is reiterated and reaffirmed now.”
The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) responded today to Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks comparing concentration camps to immigration facilities:

Ocasio-Cortez’s latest tweet attributing her own comments to Cheney have not yet elicited a response from the GOP congresswoman. But plenty of Twitter users seemed baffled by the New York lawmaker’s logic and called her out for her spin.
