President Trump said in a “Meet the Press” interview Sunday that his appointment of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General was his biggest mistake as President, and that if he could go back, he’d appoint someone else.

Trump was openly critical of Sessions throughout his tenure as AG, beginning with his decision to recuse himself from involvement in the Mueller probe, to border issues and more. Have a look at the short segment where Trump mentions Sessions …

In a related story, a new Washington Post series aimed at discrediting Trump associates and allies, the paper has alleged that Fox News host Jeanine Pirro attacked then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions on her program after he vetoed a potential hiring of Pirro for a top DOJ position by the President.

The article by the Post, entitled “The Judge Who Speaks Trump’s Language,” is an in-depth look at Pirro’s career and her long-time friendship and professional relationship with fellow New Yorker Donald Trump. She remains a close confidante of the President and an unofficial adviser to the President and others within the administration, the newpaper reports.

“They both are New Yorkers, and both speak in a very common-sense conservative way to the American people,” David Bossie, a one-time Trump campaign official, told the Post. “Having come from the same world and same generation, they understand each other completely.”

“When I joined the team, we called her on a lot of issues to get her ideas,” former campaign manager Lewandowski said. “She was very open to having someone from the team on her show, which is exceptionally helpful — and, to be clear, not every show was as willing.”

The article indicates that in November 2017, Trump was considering appointing a special counsel to investigate Hillary Clinton …

For a while, Trump considered Pirro for a Washington job, interviewing her for a top Justice Department position under Jeff Sessions — a job she lobbied hard to get, according to a senior administration official. But Sessions blocked the appointment, the official said, after which Pirro attacked Sessions on her show for recusing himself from the Russia investigation.

On Nov. 1, 2017, Pirro met privately with Trump in the Oval Office. According to people familiar with the meeting, the president and the TV host discussed appointing a special counsel to investigate Clinton, a move Sessions resisted. Two days later, Trump publicly attacked Sessions.

According to the Post article, Pirro has consistently encouraged the President both on-air and in consultations the to move forward aggressively with his agenda. In one notable episode, the Fox host said that a “cleansing” was needed at the FBI and DOJ, declaring that officials be fired and “taken out in cuffs.”

In another program, Pirro famously called Sessions “the most dangerous man in America.”

Talk of Pirro being brought into the administration, according to the article, has largely dissipated, as she is seen as a valuable asset in the media.

“She’s fearless in a way that is unique to cable TV commentary, and she is aligned perfectly with the era of Trump,” White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told the paper.

“Jeanine has a greater impact on the outside because the issues on which she is most expert rose to the fore of this presidency almost immediately,” Conway said. “And [Sessions], who didn’t make her an offer at Justice, fell out of favor . . . while her stock was rising on the outside.”

“She has brought the attention of the American people to the fact that we must investigate the investigators,” Bossie said, “and I think that’s really been a place where she’s found her voice.”
