Even crocheting and knitting needs to be anti-Donald Trump in 2019 for social justice warriors to be happy.
Ravelry — a social networking website that acts as an organizational tool for who knit, weave, crochet, etc. — has announced that they are banning support for “Donald Trump and his administration” on their site.
“We are banning support of Donald Trump and his administration on Ravelry. We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy,” the company tweeted on Sunday.

On their website, the company goes into more detail about what their “ban” means.
“We are banning support of Donald Trump and his administration on Ravelry,” reads a public statement on the matter. “This includes support in the form of forum posts, projects, patterns, profiles, and all other content. Note that your project data will never be deleted. We will never delete your Ravelry project data for any reason and if a project needs to be removed from the site, we will make sure that you have access to your data.”
Ravelry claims anyone who supports Trump supports “white supremacy.”
“We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy,” the statement reads.
They go on to say that Trump supporters are still invited to use their website, but they must keep their views to themselves. No part of the statement lays out the same rule for liberals.
“We are not endorsing the Democrats nor banning Republicans,” the company states. “We are definitely not banning conservative politics. Hate groups and intolerance are different from other types of political positions.”
The company also asks that users help “flag” Trump supporters on the site. They ask that users flag any projects, patterns, forum posts, and profiles that show “support for Trump or his administration.”
Beyond the ridiculousness of making something simple like crocheting and knitting political, this policy is ludicrous because it claims support for Trump is “undeniably” support for white supremacy. What proof is there of this?
Break that statement down. Is “Lone Survivor” author Marcus Luttrell a white supremacist? Are women and minorities who support Trump’s policies white supremacists? It’s unbelievably naive that an entire company would make such a general statement the core of their policies.
Ravelry also states that they are not “endorsing Democrats nor blaming Republicans,” but that’s exactly what this policy does. If the company put out a policy banning all political talk and opinions on their site, that would be one thing. That would be an understandable response to the divisive nature of the world and culture today. Instead they are weaponizing their own policies by targeting one group of people, something they claim Trump and his administration is doing.
Liberals have responded kindly to the banning of speech they disagree with — as is usually the case — while others have called out Ravelry’s new policy for what it is — a biased attack on Trump supporters.
