Joe Biden’s recent comments about having had “civility” with segregationist senators in the past continue to be used by his Democratic rivals as tinder for building up a roaring fire of outrage against him. Never mind that the old guy was trying to illustrate that he can get along with anyone to get things done.
Or perhaps that in itself is just as taboo today as the racist part of it … having the gall to cooperate with those who are not in lockstep with you all the way.
CNN’s dynamic duo of leftist high mindedness Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo on Thursday expressed their sympathy for Biden. Lemon explained that “inartful” stupidity is sometimes OK, as he knows he is guilty of such injudiciousness himself on occasion … ummm, no … that would be often, Mr. Lemon.
His example of personal, inartfulness was his comparison this week of Trump supporters to Hitler supporters.
Cuomo initially steered their conversation toward Cory Booker’s supposed outrage for Biden’s comments about being able to work with known segregationists, even though he didn’t agree with them. Cuomo asked Lemon if Booker was simply trying to gain an advantage in the Democratic presidential nomination stampede.
Instead of flat-out defending Biden against the accusations of being ‘out-of-step‘ and racism, Lemon responded that he understood what Biden was “trying to say” and used himself as an analogy.
“I understand it. He did it inartfully, and many times in conversations we do. I did it the other night with you when we were talking about the whole ‘who you give a platform to’ and when you look back in history, who do you want — I brought in Hitler. I didn’t mean to compare Hitler to the president, but it was inartful.”
Yeah, OK … FYI, that was apparently supposed to be Lemon’s apology.
“I was trying to — trying to speak about people who give misinformation and propaganda. And you tried to help me out. You’re like, ‘that’s an extreme example,’ so that was inartful. I didn’t mean it that way and I think we have to — sometimes people say things in a conversation, and you get what I’m trying to say, but people turn it into something else.”
“I get what Joe Biden was trying to say in the same vein,” Lemon stumbled onward. “And what he did was inartful by saying ‘boy,’ right? So if he didn’t say ‘boy,’ I think it would have landed differently. What he was saying was, ‘I can work with these people who were terrible. They were beyond racist, right? They were beyond what we have in the Senate and in the Congress right now, and if I can work with them then I can definitely work with the folks there.'”
Pause … time for some soulful introspection … “So I think,” Lemon offered, “as we said the other night, you and I got to give people a little bit more leeway. We should be nicer. We should be kinder and figure that out. And if you say something that was inartful and something comes out of your mouth that’s stupid, which happens when you’re live. You know that happens all the time. Probably me more than you. You say, ‘that’s not what I meant.'”
Cuomo seemed to want to interject …
“That’s one of the reasons your audience loves you,” he told Lemon. “You will own what you say and sometimes you’ll stick to it if it’s just that people don’t like the opinion. If you decide you didn’t say it the right way, you own it, most people don’t. You’re also existing in a gotcha culture, my brother. That’s a problem for us, too. People will take what we say, hey know where you were going with it, but you’ve given them a chance and they’ll beat you over the head with it.”
