Sen. Lindsey Graham warned that Iran needs to “get ready for severe pain” following the “big mistake” of shooting down a U.S. drone.
The South Carolina Republican reacted to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, warning that Iran’s hostile action will not be ignored.
“Here’s what Iran needs to get ready for: Severe pain inside their country,” Graham reporters on Capitol Hill Thursday.
“Their capabilities pale in comparison to ours. We’re not going to let them disrupt navigation of the seas, attack our allies and U.S. interests without paying a price,” he added. “So if they’re itching for a fight, they’re going to get one.”
Graham indicated that President Donald Trump does “not want a war” with Iran but is prepared, as commander-in-chief, to do what is needed.
“They made a big mistake in shooting our drone down,” he said, echoing Trump’s tweet on Thursday.
Iran made a very big mistake!

When a reporter asked if Iran’s move was considered “provocative,” Graham responded, “What’s provocative is to shoot the drone down.”
Iran’s radical leaders declared they are “ready for war” after they shot down a U.S. Navy drone on Wednesday.
“CENTCOM confirms that a U.S. Navy drone was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile system while operating in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz at approximately 11:35 p.m. GMT on June 19, 2019https://t.co/VTKoYtyf0u

“Shooting down the American spy drone had a clear, decisive, firm and accurate message,” Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Gen. Hossein Salami said. “The message is that the guardians of the borders of Islamic Iran will decisively respond to the violation of any stranger to this land.”

Graham remarked on the “cost of inaction” in a series of tweets Thursday.
I realize and appreciate the difficult decisions President @realDonaldTrump has to face regarding Iran’s multiple provocations.
However, when it comes to the Middle East, people rightly talk about the “Cost of Action” but they seldom mention the “Cost of Inaction.”

I have found that “Inaction” in the face of evil and provocation ultimately has its own cost.
This was best displayed by President Obama’s miscalculation in Iraq and “Inaction” in Syria.

When it comes to the Middle East, there are seldom good choices. But in some instances, failing to act can prove to be the most dangerous choice of all.

“If they do anything else against an American asset, and this president doesn’t respond like Ronald Reagan, that’s a signal to North Korea and the entire world we’re all talk,” Graham told reporters.
The senator was asked by one if the U.S. is “one step closer” to war.
“I think anybody would believe that we’re one step closer,” he replied.
