Burgess Owens takes new tack at reparation hearing: ‘How about the Democratic Party pay for all the misery brought to my race…’

The Democrat-led House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties hosted a disastrous hearing on potential slavery reparations. Chaos does not begin to describe the clown show that it was.

While a lot of nonsense and heated debate took place, there were silver linings of common sense. One of those silver linings came from former NFL star Burgess Owens.

The author and Fox News contributor described how he had moved away from the Democrat Party when he got a chance behind the microphone and he made sure to call out the hypocrisy of the political party that claims to fight for social equality.

“This is not about black or white, rich or poor, blue collar, white collar — we are fighting for the hearts of our nation,” Owens said.

The former athlete went on to say that America is a “special country” that affords each generation the opportunity to do better than the last. Each generation was told this, but he says that has changed.

“We now tell kids something a little bit different — that they don’t have the opportunities that we had,” Owens said.

Owens later made it clear that he does not believe in the idea of reparations.

“I do not believe in reparations because what reparation does is it points to a certain race, a certain color and it points to them as evil,” Owens said. He added that reparations also turns black people into “beggars.”

The most shocking moment from Owens’ testimony came when he called out the Democrat Party for their historical ties to racist movements, as well as the policies they currently push that he says hold minorities back. He said he believes that he believes in “restitution” from the Democrat Party.

“I used to be a Democrat until I did my history and found out the misery that that party brought to my race,” Owens said.

He added, “I do believe in restitution. Let’s point to the party that was part of slavery, KKK, Jim Crow, that has killed over 40 percent of our black babies, 20 million of them. State of California, 75 percent of our black boys can’t past standard reading and writing test, a Democratic state. Let’s pay reparation. Let’s pay restitution. How about a Democratic Party pay for all the misery brought to my race.”

Owens’ testimony was very different from the others given during the hearing. Actor/activist Danny Glover and writer/activist Ta-Nehisi Coates both gave testimonies in support of financial reparations from the federal government.

“White America must recognize that justice for black people can’t be achieved without radical change to the structure of our society,” Glover said during his testimony.

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) was even booed by the gathered crowd when he brought up the simple fact that even Barack Obama has said he is against reparations.

Owens played ten seasons with the NFL. He played for the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. Since leaving the NFL, Owens has written books and spoken about his personal faith and the struggles in the black community.
