Is there ever a good time to be an adolescent? Clearly, it’s especially tough now when you’re also a conservative who is daily being targeted by leftists and probed for flaws in your armor. Kyle Kashuv, who survived the Parkland high school shooting in 2018, fits that bill … and the left is feeling good about finding that he used the N-word multiple times in chat group messages with friends when he was a sophomore.
The young, pro-Second Amendment conservative has become something of a mark for liberals who have been looking to take him down. Unfortunately, those efforts recently found the genuinely boneheaded N-word stunt from two years ago when Kashuv was 16. Now the lefties have successfully pushed Harvard University to rescind his scholarship offer because of that.
Kashuv exchanged some private posts with friends who he explained, would “say the most shocking” things they could to each other at that time, months before the school shooting that killed 17 students and staff members.
“I know that forgiveness isn’t given, it’s earned,” Kashuv said in an interview with Fox’s Ed Henry on Monday. “The person who wrote those things is not who I am today.”
“How do we know that?” Henry shot back. “Because you certainly sound heartfelt, but you want to get something. You want to get into Harvard.”
Kashuv said that since he’s become a public figure, he’s condemned racism and hatred at every turn.
But Henry continued the grilling, asking why of all the shocking things he could have texted, he chose racist comments. He also hit Kushuv on the ferocity of the comments.
“You didn’t use the n-word once,” Henry said. “In one text, you used it 11 times. Where does that come from?”
“What I said is indefensible and wrong,” Kashuv reiterated.
“I apologized repeatedly. But what is also in that same message is, I used antisemitic jokes,” he said as he attempted to convince viewers that he is not racist. “I basically pray every week. I’m Jewish. My parents are Jewish. They emigrated from Israel. Half of my family was wiped out in the Holocaust. So clearly it’s not indicative of who I am. I’m Jewish. I’m not antisemitic at all.”
“I’ve matured tremendously,” Kashuv said. “I no longer am in the friend group where we act immaturely like idiotic children. I have condemned racism in the public life I didn’t ask for. I never wanted and never, quite frankly, wanted to be in the position. I’m not an entertainer, I’m not an actor. I’m a kid who went through a tragedy and saw the suffering that the community went through and doesn’t want to see it for any other community. That’s what I’m fighting for.”
“I think that people can mature and people can change,” the young man added. “… I think the purpose of education is to assist people in their progression of growth and change. I don’t wish this on anyone else.”
With Harvard’s late withdrawal of Kashuv’s scholarship, he finds himself in a very difficult position. Although he had offers from many other colleges, the deadlines for accepting those scholarships have passed. He told Henry that he doesn’t know what the future holds for him now.
