CNN’s Don Lemon summed up the administration’s delay in putting abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill as being a result of President Trump’s admiration of “slaveowner” President Andrew Jackson.
Lemon addressed the issue on “CNN Tonight” Friday following reports that the delay of the new $20 dollar bill, which would have Tubman replace Jackson on the currency, was politically motivated by the Trump administration.

Lemon made his comments after playing a video clip of Trump’s remarks on the Obama-era plan when, as a 2016 presidential candidate, he called it out as “pure political correctness” and said he’d “love” to leave Jackson on the $20 bill while Tubman could instead go on the $2 bill.
“So Harriet Tubman, the American hero who risked her life to free slaves, should get the $2 bill that hasn’t been printed in years, and Andrew Jackson, the owner of slaves who is known for the policies that lead to the deaths of countless of Native Americans, should stay on the 20?” Lemon asked.
“I guess that’s not surprising considering Trump is known to be a fan of Jackson. He praises him in interviews and on Twitter. He even added a portrait of Andrew Jackson to the Oval Office when he became president,” Lemon continued.
Last month, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told Congress that the new bills that were thought to be unveiled in 2020, were now delayed until 2026. The plan to remove the seventh U.S. president and replace him with Tubman, the American hero who helped to free slaves through the Underground Railroad,, was first announced by the Obama administration in 2016.

The delay, according to Mnuchin, was due to security concerns, a claim that Lemon called a “misleading excuse.”
“What does it say about this administration that it went through all of this to avoid giving an African-American hero, a symbol of the fight against slavery, even a token acknowledgment?” Lemon said, reacting to a new report from The New York Times claiming – without evidence – that Trump “had intervened to keep his favorite president, Andrew Jackson, a fellow populist, on the front of the note.”

“The primary reason we’ve looked at redesigning the currency is for counterfeiting issues,” Mnuchin told a House Financial Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, according to Fox Business. “It is my responsibility now to focus on what is the issue of counterfeiting and the security features. The ultimate decision on the redesign will most likely be another secretary’s down the road.”
But arguments from the left which don’t let the facts get in the way of the narrative against Trump, like that posited by Lemon, played out over media outlets quick to jump to the conclusion that the new bill being delayed is surely a sign of some sort of racism on the part of the administration.
Twitter users were quick to see right through that.
Without any proof @CNN
once again starts a misleading narrative based on NOTHING but the Opinion of @donlemon who is by far way to partisan to give a fair assessmentTrump’s admiration for ‘slaveowner’ Jackson halted Tubman $20 bill, CNN host suggestshttps://t.co/I94MZ63JEx

@donlemon most Americans do NOT want anyone on our money but presidents .. that one honor should be left alone & left to our presidents … Ms. Tubman can be honored (as she should be) another way!
your “admiration” for race baiting is disgusting!https://t.co/frbXqSTxZt

Willing to bet $20 @donlemon never considered: Jackson had flaws (doesn’t everybody?), but he also did much for the fledgling nation. Replacing him on the $20 because of those flaws is revisionist history at best. Honor Tubman? Absolutely! She’s a hero. But find another way. https://t.co/yQRDxcas8G
