Trump put politics aside, quietly called Jerry Nadler in hospital last month to wish him well

President Donald Trump reached out to one of his fiercest political critics in a personal gesture that probably won’t get much attention from the liberal media.

Despite relentlessly dogging the president with investigations and threats of impeachment, Rep. Jerry Nadler reportedly received a personal call from the president last month when he was unexpectedly hospitalized.

Trump’s get-well call got little fanfare or attention but showed how the president genuinely put politics aside to check on the man who has been a political thorn in his side for years. The president made the previously unreported call from Air Force One as he was on his way to Japan, according to a member of Nadler’s staff who wished to remain anonymous, according to Yahoo News.

Nadler was rushed to the hospital after he began to appear to pass out during a Manhattan event with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on May 24. Promoting speed cameras at the meeting being held at a school gymnasium, the New York Democratic congressman seemed pale and at one point slumped forward, prompting de Blasio to offer him water as medical assistance arrived.

The 71-year-old lawmaker was reportedly taken to Lenox Hill Hospital as “just a precaution,” one of his staff told Yahoo News. Nadler spent the night at the hospital but had apparently been suffering from dehydration aggravated by the warm temperature in the gym, according to his staff.

It was while he was at the hospital that Nadler received the call from Trump, someone he has clashed with long before the former real-estate mogul was elected president. In fact, the two clashed in the 1980’s as Trump tried to move a major real estate project in Nadler’s district which was ultimately squashed by Nadler under community opposition.

Now, as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, the Democrat has been leading the fight in launching investigations into the Trump administration and has been a vocal advocate of impeaching the president. But Trump laid their sharp political differences aside as he reportedly made that call to the hospital last month.

According to Yahoo News:

The two men had last spoken in 2017, about the Gateway project, a series of long-planned upgrades to train tunnels linking Manhattan to New Jersey and serving the entire Northeast Corridor.

Trump now told Nadler that he had seen him on television, and that he thought Nadler was “tough.” Trump repeated that assessment several times, adding that he wished the congressman well and wanted to know if he could do anything more. The two men did not discuss politics or impeachment, according to a person familiar with the call.

While the president was a vocal critic of Nadler’s on Twitter before his health scare last month, he appears to have not attacked him on social media since the incident.

Of course, there has been no change in behavior fro Nadler, however, as the Democrat has continued to pursue his  investigations of the president for alleged obstruction of justice following the conclusion of Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

The House Judiciary Committee continued its political circus Monday under Nadler’s leadership, holding a hearing that included testimony from Watergate figure John Dean.
