Despite being laughed at, mocked, discounted and told over and over again by congressional Democrats and their media allies — not to mention establishment Republicans — that he’d fail, President Donald Trump has managed to eke out a potentially historic immigration deal with Mexico.
Announced by the president Friday evening on Twitter, the deal indefinitely suspends the tariffs against Mexico that were scheduled to go into effect Monday.
I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico. The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended. Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to….

….stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. Thank you!

In exchange, Mexico “will take unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration, to include the deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border,” according to a press release by the State Department.
“Mexico is also taking decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks. Additionally, the United States and Mexico commit to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including information sharing and coordinated actions to better protect and secure our common border.”
More notably, Mexico has agreed to accept all asylum seekers, including those who step foot inside the United States either legally or illegally.
“[T]hose crossing the U.S. Southern Border to seek asylum will be rapidly returned to Mexico where they may await the adjudication of their asylum claims,” the press release explains.
“In response, Mexico will authorize the entrance of all of those individuals for humanitarian reasons, in compliance with its international obligations, while they await the adjudication of their asylum claims. Mexico will also offer jobs, healthcare and education according to its principles.”
As the U.S. and Mexico begin to implement these policies, both will also continue discussions on “further actions” that could be taken to “address irregular migrant flows and asylum issues.” The discussions are slated to continue for at least 90 days.

While Republicans responded to this potentially historic deal with cheers and glee, Democrats reacted by either ignoring it altogether or spouting their usual dose of cynicism.
“The damage of Trump’s reckless trade policies and tariffs has already been done. What we see is yet another example of him trying to be both the arsonist who created this problem in the first place and the firefighter who wants credit for addressing it,” Democrat presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke tweeted after the deal was reached.
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer appeared to mock the president by suggesting in a tweet that the inking of this deal means that illegal immigration will no longer be an issue for the United States. It’s unclear how he reached this fact-free conclusion.
Look at these tweets below:

This is an historic night!@realDonaldTrump has announced that he has cut a deal to “greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States.”
Now that that problem is solved, I’m sure we won’t be hearing any more about it in the future. https://t.co/DNNfbevkGP

To be clear, if in the upcoming weeks Mexico meets the requirements imposed by the deal, it will in effect be doing more to stop illegal immigration than congressional Democrats.
If anything, congressional Democrats have sought to only exacerbate the crisis. On Tuesday, for instance, a majority of House Democrats voted in favor of a widely panned amnesty bill that would grant full citizenship to three million illegals, including those with criminal convictions on their belt:
H.R. 6 would provide green cards to criminals, including gang members and people who committed potentially serious crimes as juveniles, with multiple DUI convictions and with misdemeanor firearms-related convictions. Dems are prioritizing mass amnesty over public safety.

Democrats’ new “Dream Act” is only a dream for criminals:
→ Blocks access to state and federal gang databases
→ Prevents felons and gang members from being referred to ICE for deportation
→ Grants amnesty to violent criminals
→ Provides $0 for border security— Steve Scalise (@SteveScalise) June 4, 2019
It’s simple: Republicans want safety from crime, and Democrats want sanctuary for criminals. Democrats’ amnesty-for-all bill today is an embarrassment. It provides $0 to solve the humanitarian and security crisis at the border, yet costs $35 billion & grants amnesty to criminals. pic.twitter.com/BesmyfaG93

It’s unclear how obstructionist Democrats will proceed now that Trump has successfully reached a deal with Mexico. Schumer’s rhetoric suggests they’ll continue their games.
House Financial Services Committee chair Maxine Waters’ rhetoric, on the other hand, suggests they’ll just deny reality — something the congresswoman happens to excel at doing.
Responding to the trade deal Friday evening, she retweeted a false story from a dubious outlet that incorrectly portrayed the president’s deal as a “cave”:
It’s unclear how securing numerous concessions counts as a cave …
