Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer set himself up for a round of mockery after his sarcastic slam of President Donald Trump’s agreement with Mexico.
The New York Democrat sneered at the president’s historic immigration deal with Mexico, quoting Trump’s announcement in a tweet of his own that was meant to ridicule the move that averted the tariffs against Mexico which would have gone into effect Monday.

“This is an historic night!” Schumer wrote on Friday in response to the president’s tweet. “Now that that problem is solved, I’m sure we won’t be hearing any more about it in the future.”
This is an historic night!@realDonaldTrump has announced that he has cut a deal to “greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States.”
Now that that problem is solved, I’m sure we won’t be hearing any more about it in the future. https://t.co/DNNfbevkGP

But Schumer’s attempted jab boomeranged back as many noted how the Democrat actually admitted there was a problem to begin with.
@SenSchumer was the guy in high school who thought he was the smartest kid in the room; unhappily he never grew up. Does anyone actually like snark?
— Liz Peek (@lizpeek) June 8, 2019
So now @SenShumer is admitting we have an illegal immigration problem?
This is indeed an historic night! https://t.co/hOJ6uu8bzH

Thanks for at least admitting it’s a problem, Chuck. https://t.co/HkrjUQvRqP

The best the Democratic leader can do is sarcasm. https://t.co/5hpiBma888

Just two days before Trump’s deal in which he convinced Mexico to agree to keep all migrants in their country until their U.S. court hearings, Schumer was accusing the president of bluffing.
Publicly, the president has continued to talk tough on tariffs with Mexico, but I continue to believe he’ll ultimately back off
When he does, I would urge him to consider commonsense policies to deal with the real issues concerning migration & the border https://t.co/w3yHormBOH
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) June 5, 2019
Trump scored his victory despite criticism and doubts from Democrats, establishment Republicans and the left with the mainstream media daily reminding Americans how the president would fail and have to backtrack over his tariff threats.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned Trump’s actions.
NEW: House speaker Nancy Pelosi on deal between the U.S. and Mexico on tariffs: “President Trump undermined America’s preeminent leadership role in the world by recklessly threatening to impose tariffs on our close friend and neighbor to the south.” https://t.co/tPyip1fWgb pic.twitter.com/zMiMGLzjO2
— ABC News (@ABC) June 8, 2019
While many remained silent after the deal was announced others, like Florida Sen. Marco Rubio predicted that it was “going to be very hard” for some in the media to “give @POTUS credit for this.”
The threat of tariffs got #Mexico to agree to take unprecedented steps to control illegal migration.
Will be very interesting to see how media covers this now. It is going to be very hard for some of them to give @POTUS credit for this. https://t.co/XmKMrSH5gU via @NYTimes
— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) June 8, 2019
In fact, the petulant media was not about to give Trump any credit.
“Analysts said the changes announced on immigration appeared to amount to little more than a continuation of steps the two countries had already agreed in December. …” IOW Trump backed down amid party complaints about pending economic/political doom. https://t.co/Hv3xtO6vtq

“Trump blinked. He blinked. He didn’t get much. He folded. He was bluffing.”
CNN’s @VanJones68 says Trump’s agreement with Mexico over immigration is not quite as sweet as he’d like you to think it is. https://t.co/CHc5zUKyHl pic.twitter.com/oGrzKEo6iL

But the sour grapes mentality from the left, epitomized by Schumer’s childish swipe at the president, only served to prove Trump has been right about the biased treatment he is given and the Democrats’ blatant agenda to fight him at every turn.
Mockery & denial: the @SenSchumer problem solving approach? How about helping change the laws and broken court orders driving this international emergency? Mexico has now proven more helpful than the @DNC. Shameful. Time for #DeedsNotWords to #SecureTheBorder https://t.co/eS2XgTdQ8v

This is not s good look, Chuck. https://t.co/JD8pO8p67G

Chuck. You seem upset Trump & Mexico are working together to solve our crisis at the border. No I’m sorry, you seem bitter. I know, you were counting on having those tariffs for Dems to run against in 2020 and of course fewer illegal immigrants means fewer Dems.
Smile more. 🙂 https://t.co/1NcZG2FcQL pic.twitter.com/UYyjEbebUl
— The?FOO (@PolitiBunny) June 8, 2019
I would take some plan, any plan, to reduce illegal immigration over the open-border nonsense that your party advocates for. Criticizing those who attempt to tackle the problem while you yourself exacerbate it is *quite* rich. https://t.co/y7cM2brBtt
— Erielle Davidson (@politicalelle) June 8, 2019
This deal Trump just made with Mexico to end catch and release where any migrants claiming asylum must remain in Mexico awaiting their adjudication is EPIC.
No other politician in America had the will and vision to do this.
Democrats want him impeached.
— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) June 8, 2019
This is a bad look @SenSchumer. Can you please outline all the big steps Democrats have taken to address the border crisis? Voters want to know.
As they say on Twitter, I’ll wait. https://t.co/2brDofCiXO
— Andrew Clark (@AndrewHClark) June 8, 2019
Catch and Release: Ended
Mexico’s Southern border: Secured
Cartels: Defunded
And we didn’t have to apply tariffs!
Mexico had taken advantage of the United States for too long.
President Trump is fighting and winning for America
What are Democrats doing?
