CNN’s Lemon and Cuomo bash ‘Straight Pride’ parade using ironic choice of words

CNN’s Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo dismissed a planned “Straight Pride” parade in Boston, blasting the event and its supporters as “ignorant” and “bigoted.”

Lecturing viewers on alleged efforts to minimize the LGBTQ community, the two blasted the event scheduled in response to Boston’s annual gay pride parade being held Saturday.

Lemon spoke to his colleague on “Cuomo Prime Time” Friday, noting that up until 2015, he could not legally marry another man in the United States. And though some things may have changed, there are many challenges still facing the LGBTQ community he noted.

“People can still lose their job because of their sexual orientation. People still get killed because of it,” Lemon, who is gay, said. “If you look at toxic things said online about people, members of the LGBTQ community, if you look at the criticism of me, go on any social media site, any criticism, a lot of it is rooted in homophobia.”

“March if you want,” Lemon said after his rant that included everything from how he is maligned on social media to how many heterosexual men think every gay man is trying “to entice them.”

“Not on this one,” Cuomo countered. “Straight pride, at best, you’re being ignorant if you join.”

“And bigoted,” Lemon interjected.

“Let’s be honest, you know what you’re doing. You’re trying to say that you don’t like what you see as its opposite,” Cuomo declared.

“There is no need for ‘Straight Pride,’” he argued. “This is about recognizing minorities, recognizing people that need a come-up. It’s not about saying ‘We’re all equal, we can all do it,’ that’s the same thing as saying ‘all lives matter.’”

Lemon posited a question about whether straight people are really “aggrieved and oppressed” to which Cuomo offered his non-expert analysis of how especially white males are threatened by the changes in the status quo. Somehow, Cuomo managed to find a way to blame President Trump for connecting with the “angst” being felt.

The group Super Happy Fun America has planned the “Straight Pride” parade “to achieve inclusivity and spread awareness of issues impacting straights in Greater Boston and beyond.” The proposed event, which has not been finalized as the group attempts to secure the proper permits, set off a firestorm of backlash when it was announced at the outset of Pride Month.

Some famous Bostonians like “Avengers” actor Chris Evans blasted the planned parade as “homophobic.”

The organization announced Friday that conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos was named the grand marshal for the parade which is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 31. The openly gay Yiannopoulos accepted the invitation of the group after they were asked to remove actor Brad Pitt’s name and likeness, which was originally used to promote the event.

“I might technically be a sequined and perfectly coiffed friend of Dorothy’s, but I’ve spent my entire career advocating for the rights of America’s most brutally repressed identity — straight people — so I know a thing or two about discrimination,” Yiannopoulos said in a statement released by Super Happy Fun America.

While Lemon and Cuomo must have felt they were doing America a favor by lecturing on the “ignorant” and “bigoted” parade, many Twitter users  noted the inherent irony of their rant.
