Today, June 6, marks the 75th anniversary of the World War II D-Day invasion of France … an immense endeavor that successfully turned the tide of history and preserved our freedoms. Surviving veterans from those dreadful and bloody days, along with leaders of the nations that made up the Allied forces, gathered in Normandy for a series of commemorations that have extended over a period of several days.
President Trump spoke at a ceremony near Omaha Beach at the Normandy American Cemetery. He said that on that day in 1941, 10,000 men sacrificed their lives for their fellow troops and their countries, and for the “survival of liberty.”
“On these shores, on these bluffs, on this day 75 years ago, 10,000 men shed their blood and thousands sacrificed their lives for their brothers, for their countries, and for the survival of liberty,” said Trump. “Today we remember those who fell and we honor all who fought right here in Normandy. They won back this ground for civilization. To more than 170 veterans of the Second World War who join us today, you are among the very greatest Americans who will ever live. You’re the pride of our nation. You are the glory of our republic and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
The President greeted the veterans with handshakes before taking the stage.

Trump praised the 130,000 service members who participated in the greatest invasion force in history … as “citizens of free and independent nations, united by their duty to their compatriots and to millions yet unborn.”
Commemoration events, as reported by the BBC included:
- Flybys of military and historic aircraft
- Parachute jumps by D-Day veterans
- Readings by world leaders from the diaries and letters of people who fought and died in the war
- An hour-long production telling the story of the invasion
- A joint statement by 16 countries pledging to avoid a repeat of the “unimaginable horrors” of the conflict.
The U.K.’s Queen Elizabeth was among the dignitaries who spoke. She said those who fought on D-Day demonstrated “more than courage and endurance,” and showed “unconquerable resolve.” The quotes originated from a broadcast by her father, King George VI, at the time of the massive operation. “The fate of the world depended on their success,” she said. “Many of them would never return, and the heroism, courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten.”
The Queen thanked the veterans in attendance “with humility and pleasure, on behalf of the entire country, indeed the whole free world.”
The President repeatedly hailed the courage of the men who fought the Nazis and won back the freedom of Europe …
