After vehement denials, new docs indicate Elijah Cumming’s wife used charity to embellish for-profit LLC

Last month various conservative media outlets ran stories suggesting that House Oversight Committee chair Elijah Cummings’ wife is a dirty crook who funneled donations collected from a non-profit she runs into her for-profit consulting firm, Global Policy Solutions, LLC.

Following the publication of these reports, none of which were picked up by the mainstream “propaganda” media, Cummings slammed conservative media outlets for their “political hit jobs.”

“These baseless claims come from a group funded by right-wing mega-donors known for their political hit jobs,” he said in a statement to Fox News. “I am confident that they will be exposed for what they really are – a fabricated distraction from the important work being done on behalf of Americans, such as lowering the skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs.”

A week has passed since the House Oversight Committee chair issued that statement, and well, he may want to consider retracting it and issuing an apology. Why? Because newly uncovered evidence appears to shows that his wife, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, is indeed a rotten crook:

Audited financial statements for Rockeymoore’s charity, the Center for Global Policy Solutions, show that it paid over $250,000 in so-called “management fees” to her for-profit firm between 2013 and 2015.

“The management fees were paid in addition to a cost-sharing agreement where the charity pays for its share of equipment, personnel and other expenditures,” investigative journalist Andrew Kerr of The Daily Caller has confirmed.

That’s awfully shady …

“It’s self-dealing. It’s taking the charity’s resources and turning them into personal profits,” National Legal and Policy Center investigator Tom Anderson said to Kerr. “IRS law doesn’t allow a charity for this purpose. This isn’t for the public interest, this is for her personal interest. You can’t do that.”

The National Legal and Policy Center is a nearly 30-year-old non-profit (as in actual non-profit) that monitors public officials and public unions for potential ethics violations. It’s the same organization that filed an ethics complaint against socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, three months ago.

The larger problem, according to Anderson, is the link between Rockeymoore’s corruption and her husband’s work. Previous reporting revealed that her non-profit “charity” has received millions in donations from special interest groups that have had business before Cummings’ committee.

“The problem is there are millions of dollars coming into these entities from corporations and special interests with business before Elijah Cummings, and any time you have that, every rule has to be followed or else it opens the door for massive corruption,” Anderson said.

As a result of this clear-cut corruption, the National Legal and Policy Center reportedly filed an ethics complaint against Rockeymoore’s non-profit and for-profit companies in May.

Until the situation in resolved, she should probably abandon the management fees, said Daniel Borochoff, the president of Charity Watch, an actual non-profit that monitors the activities of alleged charities.

He specifically said that “the funds flowing from Rockeymoore Cummings’s charity from the 5% management fee is problematic given her husband’s regulatory authority over the business interests funding her charity,” according to Kerr.

“That connection could be made,” Borochoff said in his own words. “All the more reason to get rid of that 5% arrangement. My advice to them: get rid of the percentage arrangement and pay the LLC for whatever work its performing, but also to do whatever it can to separate the for-profit from the nonprofit.”

But given the arrogance displayed by most far-leftist legislators and their other halves, it seems unlikely that Cummings and his wife will take this advice, let alone even acknowledge that there’s a problem.

See the audited documents below:

What will happen if they refuse to take action? They should expect a thorough investigation, at the very least, according to Sally Wagenmaker, a Chicago attorney who specializes in nonprofit tax law.

The alleged corruption “deserve[s] investigation by the proper authorities, even though the full picture is unclear because of the complexity of the law and the incompleteness of the publicly disclosed information,” she said to Kerr.

“It’s a red flag for a powerful member like Elijah Cummings to have a family member receiving money from entities with issues before his powerful committee,” Scott Walter, the president of the conservative watchdog group Capital Research Center, added.

To be clear, Cummings wife is also involved in Democrat Party politics. She chairs the Maryland Democrat Party and seemingly spends all day, everyday talking trash on social media about President Donald Trump:

She also has a history of complaining about Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, allegedly siphoning “money away from socially beneficial projects”:

It’s unclear whether or not she owns a mirror …
