Maxine Waters says Trump lacks ‘expertise’ to negotiate with China, calls the president a ‘bluffer’

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) does not believe President Donald Trump possesses the right “expertise” to properly perform trade negotiations with China. The decades-long politician also said China knows the president is a “bluffer.”

Appearing on CNN’s “New Day,” Waters said, “[Trump] does not appear to have the expertise and the kind of support that gives you credible information about these decisions.”

The congresswoman continued, “If he wants to do real trade or change trade, he needs to be in negotiations. He needs to talk about what makes good sense with this country and our businesses. And I think the bluffing is over and China retaliated because they know he’s a bluffer now.”

Waters also said that Trump is making decisions about things like trade tariffs “in a vacuum.” Waters said tariffs on goods from China only hurts business owners, especially ones in California, the state she represents in the House.

Waters has said some bizarre things, but saying the president lacks the “expertise” to negotiate good trade deals is really out there. Unlike Waters, Trump has spent decades negotiating trade deals and building international businesses. For a career politician to say that a private business owner lacks the “expertise” to run this country is insulting and pure nonsense. It’s that sort of arrogant language that tells us that politicians like Waters are scared that Trump has shaken up the status quo by actually doing things while in office.

Waters also doubled down on past comments made by her in support of impeaching the president. At one point, Waters said that the only conclusion to reach after one reads the Mueller report is that “impeachment is inevitable.”

Waters is currently chairing the House Financial Services Committee and she is working on getting the IRS to turn over the president’s tax returns. Her effort to obtain the returns has been a failure thus far.

On the topic of Trump’s newly announced immigration reform proposal, Waters did her typical anti-Trump dance for the camera.

“There should be comprehensive immigration reform,” Waters said at one point, “but not immigration reform that’s based on exciting and inciting those people who have negative thoughts about others coming across our border and basically working to use that information to promote himself in a campaign.”

She then added, “And I think some of that is very racist. It is not keeping with what this country is supposed to be all about.”

Waters wasn’t done. She then went on to call parts of Trump’s new proposal “racist.” She said a points-based system — which the proposal uses to determine who will get a green card — strikes her as racist, especially if points are awarded for things like speaking English.

If that’s all it takes for Waters to scream about racism then her standards for racist behavior are frighteningly low. It’s also telling that, like many other Democrats, she will go after the president for his immigration policies, but she never offers any alternative.
