Gowdy mocks pomposity of Comey: ‘Saint James’ thinks he ‘gets to write the moral script’

Former congressman Trey Gowdy slammed former FBI Director James Comey and his “moral arrogance” in a recent town hall interview.

The former South Carolina Republican mocked “Saint James Comey” for his pompous remarks as he spoke about the CNN town hall event in an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Friday.

The fired FBI chief gave “pretty much the same as any other interview,” Gowdy told guest host Jason Chaffetz. “He is always right. He gets to write the moral script.”

The former federal prosecutor blasted Comey for his attack on outgoing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, saying he did not have a “strong character.”

“I think people like that, like Rod Rosenstein, who are people of accomplishment but not real sterling character, strong character, find themselves trapped. And then they start telling themselves a story to justify their being trapped which is, ‘Yeah, he’s awful but the country needs me,’” Comey told host Anderson Cooper at the live event.

Comey also patted himself on the back as he claimed he disagreed with President Trump so he wouldn’t become like Rosenstein and other “co-opted” members of the administration.

“When I asked Jim Comey how did the Russia investigation get started, who started it, he didn’t know it was Peter Strzok, he never read the initiation document,” Gowdy said. “Comey refuses to believe that any of these decisions should be looked at, so he is always right. Everybody else is wrong.”

“He and [former Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper and [former CIA Director John] Brennan are validating the concerns that other people including the president have had about their objectivity by their comments and their demeanor after they left their offices,” Gowdy added.

The “self-described paragon of virtue” would still be leading the FBI “and working for an administration he thinks is too good for impeachment” if he had not been fired, Gowdy concluded.

Chaffetz, a former Utah congressman, agreed that Comey’s comments were inappropriate.

Rep. Devin Nunes also blasted the former FBI chief during an appearance on “Fox & Friends” Friday.

“This is a guy who continues to just make a mockery of the entire FBI and the Department of Justice,” the California Republican said.

“The former FBI director is not a stupid man and he’s acting awfully stupid,” Nunes said, reacting to Comey’s remarks during the town hall on how he didn’t believe any misconduct by the FBI would be uncovered in an investigation. “He could do a town hall and make a lot of things up, but look, I think Mr. Comey is in a lot of trouble and he should be. He made a mess of the FBI.”
