Mika & Joe upset ‘white’ Red Sox players had the gall to take once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit WH

Mika Brzezinski railed against members of the Boston Red Sox for not standing united with their team in boycotting a visit to the White House.

The MSNBC host tangled with the rest of the “Morning Joe” cast in smugly calling out team members who were apparently on the wrong side of the political decision to respond to President Trump’s invitation on Thursday to celebrate their 2018 World Series title.

Most of the team’s black and Hispanic players joined manager Alex Cora in opting out of the invitation as a protest against alleged racist rhetoric by the president. Team leadership met with Trump on Thursday and team members who visited with wounded soldiers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center then joined the president for a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House.

Host Joe Scarborough bemoaned the split attendance by the team which saw players such as 2018 American League Most Valuable Player Mookie Betts, star pitcher David Price, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers, Hector Velazquez, Xander Bogaerts, Sandy Leon and Christian Vazquez decline to attend, according to the Boston Globe.

“I don’t understand for the life of me why one white guy couldn’t have stayed back,” Scarborough exclaimed.

“I don’t understand how it became such a segregated affair,” he added, wondering how it would impact the team going forward.

Kimberly Atkins, senior correspondent for WBUR-FM, agreed that it was a “clearly racially divided scene” and accused the president of “injecting himself into sports and using that as a divider.”

Brzezinski couldn’t wait to jump in with her take on what it means to be a team member.

“If one member of a team is not comfortable or two or three, why would anyone on that team go? Isn’t it all about unity?” she asked.

Donny Deutsche interjected with a more sensible take, noting that Red Sox members who seized on a chance to visit the White House have just as much right to do so as team members who decided to protest and not visit.

“Actually, I don’t think that applies,” Brzezinski shot back. “The reasons why these players didn’t go are so much more important than getting a free trip to the White House. Come on! Stick with your team.”

“This is why it’s difficult,” Scarborough interjected as Brzezinski continued her dramatics.

“I’m not going to tell a 23-year-old kid from Texas, that may never get a chance to go to the White House again, ‘you’ve got to make a political statement even if you don’t follow politics,'” he said, while struggling to maintain that “it’s about the team.”

He argued that the unity goes both ways and that a white team member should have opted out with the protesting players who didn’t go because “this is the most racist president certainly in our lifetime.”

The show’s discussion of the issue and Brzezinski’s “sanctimonious” attitude earned plenty of mockery on Twitter.
