Sen. Richard Blumenthal told reporters Thursday that President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., should be imprisoned if he fails to comply with a Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena.
“The subpoena should be enforced,” the senator, who chairs no committees and isn’t even a member of the Intelligence Committee, said to a reporter with The Hill.
“If he refuses to obey it, he should be locked up. There are no privileges for Donald Trump Jr. The son of the president doesn’t have any of those privileges,” he said, referring to executive privilege.”
A similar threat was issued to a CNN reporter:

The stunning threat was issued a day after reports emerged that the GOP-led Intelligence Committee had subpoenaed Trump Jr. to testify again in regard to alleged Russian collusion.
What’s known is that Senate Democrats have been pestering “congressional committees to review the testimony of key witnesses such as [Donald] Trump Jr. to determine if their answers matched the findings of the Mueller report,” as reported by The Hill.
But why wouldn’t his prior testimony match the findings? Better yet, suppose his testimony differs from what the special counsel found. Wouldn’t Mueller, who spent years thoroughly investigating the whole matter, have noticed? Or do Democrats now think that he, their former hero, is a dunce?
What’s also unclear is why Intelligence Committee chair Richard Burr, a purported Republican from North Carolina, has chosen to indulge the Democrats’ Russian collusion delusion conspiracy theories (or coup, as conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh often puts it).
Trump Jr. has for his part not really responded yet to the subpoena, though a source reportedly close to him did issue a statement complaining that the president’s son is “a private citizen” and noting that he’s already delivered “eight to nine hours of testimony in front of the Senate.”
“Don continues to cooperate by producing documents and is willing to answer written questions, but no lawyer would ever agree to allow their client to participate in what is an obvious PR stunt from a so-called ‘Republican’ senator too cowardly to stand up to his boss Mark Warner and the rest of the resistance Democrats on the committee,” the source added.

However, the president’s son hasn’t rejected the subpoena himself yet. His father, on the other hand, did reportedly issue a statement from the Oval Office late Thursday afternoon.
“I was very surprised. I saw Burr saying there was no collusion two or three weeks ago. I was very surprised to see my son — my son is a good person, he works hard. The last thing he needs is Washington, D.C. He’d rather not be involved,” the president said.
“My son is a good person,” he added. “He testified for hours and hours. My son was totally exonerated by Mueller who doesn’t like Trump, me. And for my son, after being exonerated to now get a subpoena to speak again after telling everyone about a nothing meeting, I’m pretty surprised.”
A slew of Republicans have issued similar statements in defense of Trump Jr.
Serving a subpoena to Don Trump Jr.—a private citizen who voluntarily testified before 3 Congressional committees for 25+ hours—is beyond inappropriate. He answered questions and was cleared in the Mueller report after a 2 year, unlimited investigation.
It’s over. Let it go.

Lindsey Graham on Sen. Intel Trump Jr. subpoena: “If I were his lawyer I wouldn’t put him back into this circus. The freak show in the house, I’m not gonna let it come to the Senate so we gave Mueller two years and $25 million and it’s over for me.”

Chuck Grassley: “I think about the time that he [Trump Jr.] spent hours w/our staff & testimony…everything post the Mueller report coming out & its conclusions of no collusion or any crime. What more is there to do now? You’ll have to ask the people of the Intelligence Cmte.”

I agree with Leader McConnell: this case is closed. The Mueller Report cleared @DonaldJTrumpJr and he’s already spent 27 hours testifying before Congress. Dems have made it clear this is all about politics. It’s time to move on & start focusing on issues that matter to Americans. https://t.co/11THs9LE0j

The only one who hasn’t responded yet is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“What Burr’s doing isn’t just a slap in the face to the President and his family, its a slap in the face to Americans across the country,” one of his top donors said in a statement to Breitbart.
“It’s incumbent that Leader McConnell steps up to the plate and strips Senator Burr’s Chairmanship of the Intel Committee. If he refuses to do that, then he shoulders just as much blame for this travesty of justice as the Senator from North Carolina.”
As of Friday morning, the Senate majority leader still hadn’t spoken out about Burr’s actions, let alone Blumenthal’s astounding threat.
