Holy smokes! Sleepy Joe, despite an ongoing string of stumbles, gaffes, and controversies, has jumped into the pool of Democrat contenders and swamped the competition. A new Hill-HarrisX poll released Monday shows Biden with a commanding 32-point lead over second-place Bernie Sanders.

32 points! Seems maybe the former vice president can go take a nap before going back out on the campaign trail. Maybe a lot of naps, to keep from talking about visits with his friend Margaret Thatcher.

The poll was taken among 440 registered voters who identified as or leaned toward being Democrat or independent on Friday and Saturday. The question was asked: “Who should be the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nominee?”

Joe Biden was the preference of a whopping 46 percent of the respondents. Sen. Bernie Sanders polled at 14 percent. Is the socialist shtick finally getting stiffed?

Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg was in third place at 8 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren was fourth with 7 percent.

Sen. Kamala Harris was next with 6 percent, followed by former Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Sen. Cory Booker with 3 percent each.

It’s clearly very early in the primary campaigning process, but not too early for most or all of the rest of these people to be bailing out.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, former HUD secretary Julian Castro, former Rep. John Delaney, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, and Sen. Michael Bennet tallied between 1 and 2 percent.

Belly up and flat-lined on the beach are Rep. Tim Ryan, entrepreneur Andrew Yang, author Marianne Williamson, Gov. Jay Inslee, Rep. Eric Swalwell, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Gov. John Hickenlooper , and Wayne Messam, mayor of Miramar, Florida, who all received between 0 and 1 percent support.

According to The Hill, “No respondents expressed support for Rep. Seth Moulton and former Sen. Mike Gravel. Four percent of respondents named someone else.”

Republican strategist Conor Maguire told The Hill the race could still turn, pointing to the 2016 Republican presidential primary that was completely turned on its head by the surprise candidacy of Donald Trump.

“This is a long, long primary,” Maquire said. “At this point, Trump hadn’t even made his ride down the escalator yet, so there’s going to be a lot of things that are going to change and we’re going to see how they move.”

The reported sampling margin of error for the poll is 4.7 percentage points.

One thing seems to be clear … there are Democrats and independents who are not on board with the socialist revolution, and if Biden resists the impulse to follow the lefty crowd over that cliff, he’ll get plenty of support in the primaries.
