The Hill says Chasten Buttigieg is emerging as Mayor Pete’s secret weapon

Dyngus Day is a Polish holiday celebrating the end of Lent. It has been celebrated in South Bend for decades with kielbasa, polka music, and beer, and unofficially kicks off the city's political campaign season. (Photo by KAMIL KRZACZYNSKI / AFP)

The mainstream media has discovered Democrat presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg’s “secret weapon” going into the 2020 election: his husband, Chasten Buttigieg.

“The 29-year-old school humanities and drama junior high teacher from Michigan not only functions as a much sought-after campaign spokesman and adviser, but he is also helping humanize the first gay major presidential candidate in a country that only legalized same-sex marriage four years ago,” The Hill wrote Saturday in a report that reads more like a fluffy opinion column.

“For now, as Pete Buttigieg, also widely known as Mayor Pete, has surged in the Democratic polls, so has the attention lavished on Chasten Buttigieg, who took a leave from the Montessori Academy to join him on the campaign trail,” the piece continues, adding that Buttigieg is the first gay candidate in American history “with a genuine shot at winning,” in part because of his focus on his homosexuality.

Chasten boasts more followers on Twitter than actual presidential candidates Reps. Tim Ryan and Eric Swalwell.

The Hill’s piece continues by noting that Buttigieg, the current mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has focused his campaign in part on “his biography as a gay Christian millennial.”

“The couple speak openly about their relationship, including how they met through a dating app, their first date, and their marriage in 2018. They also own two dogs, Buddy and Truman, and Pete Buttigieg has talked about eventually having kids,” the piece notes.

The story also notes that Chasten Buttigieg has been introducing his husband at events and even campaigning on his own.

“Chasten Buttigieg now introduces his husband at some stops and also branches out on his own, including addressing the Human Rights Campaign in Houston and visiting the Ali Forney Center, a shelter for homeless LGBTQ young people, in New York,” it reads.

And apparently, Democrats seem to like this, despite what appear to be double standards. In the past, politicians and media pundits who focused on a candidate’s spouse versus the candidate were accused of perpetrating sexism, but those rules don’t seem to apply to the Buttigiegs.

The left has latched onto the Buttigiegs as the harbingers of some allegedly new, more tolerant America where everything revolves around promoting one’s sexuality, so long as it’s not heterosexuality, of course.

Case in point:

Earlier this month, the 2020 contender and MSNBC host Rachel Maddow shared their coming out stories with one another. It’s unclear what their sexuality has to do with being president.

Some would argue that the fact that the mayor is gay is the only thing he brings to the table. That and his disdain for Vice President Mike Pence’s devout Christian beliefs.

Buttigieg has repeatedly smeared the VP, describing his beliefs as “fanatical” and suggesting that he shouldn’t be in a “position of power” because of the danger he poses to the LGBTQ community.

“My marriage to Chasten has made me a better man. And yes, Mr. Vice President, it has moved me closer to God,” said Buttigieg in a speech he delivered earlier this month at the LGBTQ Victory Fund’s annual brunch

Not once has the VP ever made a public remark about the mayor’s marriage. In fact, in his just-released memoir, Buttigieg explicitly admitted that Pence has always been “gracious and decent to me in person.”

He added that when he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 as part of his Navy duties, then-Gov. Pence reached out to him.

“He was noticeably moved by my deployment. He called me the day I was driving to the base,” wrote Buttigieg.

Despite this kindness, Buttigieg continues to attack the vice president.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’RE MISSING …

While going after the vice president’s faith in his attacks could alienate Christians and Republicans, Democrats continue to love Buttigieg.

“Pete Buttigieg is a wunderkind, but at the core of it all is authenticity,” Democratic strategist Don Calloway told The Hill. “His appeal is that he is young and smart, of course, but he is leading with his full self.”

And his husband, who appears to be inseparable from him …

“They are young, handsome and happy and in love, so their relationship is an asset to the campaign, much like it would be for a straight couple,” Calloway concluded.

If he says so …
