House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff received an unexpected reality check on Friday evening from liberal comedian and commentator Bill Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time.”
The moment occurred during a discussion about the Russian collusion conspiracy theory that Schiff still clings to like a pillar during a hurricane.
“I do think [Mueller] laid out what we needed to see, which is that the Russians were engaged in a systemic effort to interfere in our election, that the Trump campaign welcomed it, embraced it, built it into their plan, made full use of it, lied about it, covered it up and then obstructed the investigation into it,” Schiff argued during the discussion. “And if we had any doubt before about this president’s fitness for office there was no doubt remaining. He is unfit for the presidency.”
That’s when Maher hit him with a gut punch of truth.
“But this was our big gun,” the comedian said, referring to special counsel Robert Mueller’s quite unfruitful investigation into Russian collusion. “Now it just looks like you’re stalking him, I think in the eyes of the people who don’t follow it that closely, which is most of the country.”
Watch this stunning moment below, and take note of the angry look on Schiff’s face:
That’s what used to be called a Kodak moment.
It triggered widespread mockery of Schiff on social media.
“You will were just on @billmaher, Where he said you’re basically stalking the President and gave some good advice to stop making everything about him! Now look at your Twitter page, Trump,Trump, Trump! Your jealousy is so transparent, Get a life stalker!” one user wrote.

While Maher had presumably meant the remark in jest, Schiff does seem to possess an obsessive-compulsive fixation with President Donald Trump and his alleged, unproven crimes.
When asked earlier this week about his past claims that the president’s alleged Russian collusion would turn out to be a scandal “of a size and scope probably beyond Watergate,” the House Intelligence Committee chair doubled down on this since-debunked theory.
“I think it’s clear from the Mueller report that that’s exactly right,” he said to ABC’s “This Week” host Martha Raddatz. “The obstruction of justice in particular in this case is far worse than anything that Richard Nixon did. The break-in by the Russians of the democratic institutions, a foreign adversary, is far more significant than the plumbers breaking into the Democratic headquarters. So yes, I would say in every way this is more significant than Watergate.”
Except that Mueller’s report exonerated Trump of collusion and made it clear there wasn’t enough evidence to pin obstruction of justice on him either, as noted Friday by Maher.
“Here’s the thing about Bob Mueller: He’s the last thing in America that left and right agreed on,” Maher tried to explain to Schiff. “Left and right basically agreed, this is a guy of honor, this is an honest guy, this is an honest broker, whatever he says goes. Americans aren’t into details. ‘Don’t read it to me, Bob. Just give me a thumbs up or thumbs down.'”
Indeed. It was argued for two years straight by Mueller’s supporters among mainly Democrats and some establishment Republicans that he would be the final arbiter of truth on alleged Russian collusion.
But now that Mueller has completed his investigation and it’s been revealed that there just isn’t enough evidence to indict the president, Democrats are pretending as if they hadn’t just spent two years touting Mueller as some sort of divine figure whose wonderful words are worthy of their own Bible.
“The fact that he was like, ‘eh,'” Maher continued, mocking Mueller’s refusal to indict the president, “if you couldn’t impeach before, how are you going to impeach after? Or should you?”
“I’m not there yet on impeachment,” Schiff replied. “I may get there — he may get me there — but here’s the awful dilemma that we face: if we don’t impeach him, that sends a message that this kind of conduct, this obstruction of justice, this kind of willing use of the help of a foreign adversary, all the lies and cover-up, that this is non-impeachable.”
Schiff has actually been touting impeachment for years. Last year he suggested potentially impeaching the president over the allegedly fraudulent tax maneuvers he’d once employed as a private businessman.
Schiff continued, “At the same time, if we do impeach him, and he is acquitted, as he would likely be acquitted, then the message is: those are non-impeachable offenses. “At the end of the day, Bill, there is only one way to deal with the problem whether we impeach him or not, and that is to vote his ass out of office.”
Well, this strategy certainly beats acting like a creepy stalker! While Schiff’s alias, “Pencil Neck,” isn’t the most flattering, it’s still better than “Schiff the Stalker,” you know?
