One of the most radically left-wing states in America in on the verge of making it legal for human remains to be transformed into human compost, i.e., gardening soil.
Last Friday Washington state’s Senate and House of Representatives passed SB 5001, a bill that would legalize human composting. While Democrat Gov. Jay Inslee hasn’t confirmed yet whether he’ll sign it, his spokeswoman did reportedly describe it as “a thoughtful effort to soften our footprint.”
The process of composting human bodies into literal wheelbarrows of gardening soil is considered to be significantly more environmentally friendly than traditional burial methods.
“Recompose gets as close to the natural process of decomposition [as] you’d assume a body would undergo before we had an industrialized society,” Troy Hottle, a postdoctoral fellow with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, said to The Seattle Times.
“In an urban environment, which is where the global population is growing and land use is at a premium, it’s the most efficient and environmentally sound method of burial.”
The bill is the brainchild of Katrina Spade, the founder and CEO of Recompose, an organization seeking to replace traditional burial services with human composting for the benefit of the environment.
Happy #EarthDay@GovInslee Did you know that a bill is coming your way that will allow us to give back to the planet when we die? SB5001 passed legislature last week, allowing for new death care options that use less energy and help sequester carbon. #cycleoflife pic.twitter.com/M8zNMQGg4a

“By converting human remains into soil, we minimize waste, avoid polluting groundwater with embalming fluid, and prevent the emissions of CO2 from cremation and from the manufacturing of caskets, headstones, and grave liners,” Recompose’s website reads.
“By allowing organic processes to transform our bodies and those of our loved ones into a useful soil amendment, we help to strengthen our relationship to the natural cycles while enriching the earth.”
The organization also argues that human composing would be ideal for combating climate change.
While Spade reportedly came up with the idea, it was Democrat state Sen. Jamie Pedersen of Seattle who drafted a bill and introduced it in the state’s Congress last December.
“Frankly, in this corner of the country, we’re among the least churched but most environmentally friendly,” he said at the time. “The idea that your loved one could become soil that would be the basis for planting a lovely rhododendron or oak tree or whatever you want could be really popular.”
He also claimed that many of his constituents were “very excited about the prospect of becoming a tree or having a different alternative for themselves.”
“Of all the options for the disposition of human remains, this would be by far the most environmentally friendly,” he added in a more recent statement to the Times. “It’s just what used to happen before the arrival of $5,000 caskets covered with ecologically unfriendly varnishes and all the rest.”
If Inslee signs Pedersen’s bill, Washington will become the first state to allow human composting. Critics of the plan say it displays an innate disregard for human life.

Democrats just won’t stop! Is nothing sacred to liberals?!Washington state lawmakers passed a bill that would allow “natural organic reduction” of human remains, citing careful composted human remains could be safe for use in a household gardenhttps://t.co/Cd1Dy93TlQ

First the Dems push the murder of preborn babies, the handicapped, and elderly. Now complete disrespect for human life in the desecration of our remains into nothing more than fertilizer. Disgusting.https://t.co/kpdbxs8FW5

Twitter user Linda Brake did have a point, particularly in regard to Washington, one of a select few liberal states which don’t require a waiting period or a mandatory ultrasound for abortions.
In fact, Washington state is so pro-abortion that it passed its own abortion law.
“Washington has created additional protections for reproductive rights by adding an affirmative right to choose into its state law. In 1991, Washington voters narrowly passed this law via a ballot initiative, reaffirming the holdings of Roe v. Wade in the state,” NARAL Pro-Choice America notes.
Washington is likewise among just five states that provide “strongly protected access” to abortion:

Washington is also among a handful of states where assisted suicide (euthanasia) is legal.
Critics argue that given the state’s disregard for babies and senior citizens, it’s no wonder legislators in the left-wing state are now pushing to legalize human composting.
