Sen. Bernie Sanders is all for housing illegal immigrants along the U.S. border but don’t ask him about President Trump’s plan to send them to sanctuary cities.
The Independent senator from Vermont and 2020 presidential candidate rebuffed the question as a “political act” during a heated Fox News town hall on Monday.

Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum hosted the event held in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, questioning Sanders on a variety of topics such as the “wealth tax” he has advocated, climate change and immigration. When MacCallum asked him about what to do with the illegal immigrants being held in overcrowded detention facilities, Sanders proposed housing them in buildings along the border.
“What about building proper facilities for them right now? It could be done,” he said, adding “Right on the border,” when he was asked where the buildings would be built.
“So the people who live on the border should have more facilities in their states but sanctuary cities, which have said they are open to accepting people, should not take more?” MacCallum asked.
But Sanders deflected, as is his norm, by getting angry at the question.
“This is a political act. No, it’s not a real question,” he fired at MacCallum.
“Yes, it is,” she pushed back.
“It’s a political decision. So what you want to do — let’s talk about immigration, which is a real issue,” he went on, avoiding the question.
“First of all, instead of demonizing immigrants — I won’t say you are but we have a president who certainly does every single day. What we need is comprehensive immigration reform. That’s what the American people want. And if we had a president who believed in that, we can actually do it,” he said to applause from the audience.
The president all but confirmed reports that his administration had proposed a plan to release illegal immigrant detainees into sanctuary cities to relieve overcrowding at detention centers. And he suggested the proposal was still valid, sending liberals into a meltdown as they destroyed their own arguments in an effort to attack Trump.

Sanders gave no other details about his idea to build housing for the detainees and only referred to the president in order to attack him.
“You know, you got today — Trump ended the DACA program that Obama established,” he said, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
“You know what that means? That means every day more and more young people who are raised in the United States from two or three years of age, they are in the military, they are teachers. They are working all over this country,” he went on. “They are now scared to death that somebody is going to pick them up and throw them out of the country, and that is what Trump did.”
Sanders turned his attention back at the Fox News anchors, ranting about not making the issue political while he did just that, while still avoiding the original question MacCallum asked him.
“Look, Martha, I’m not saying this is an easy issue, but let’s not politicize it. What we need, as I said, we need the proper legal processes at the border so that these issues can be adjudicated to determine whether or not people should be entitled to asylum,” he said.
“And you didn’t talk about a wall or security there, but you’ve talked about that before,” Baier interjected.
“We need border security, of course we do. Who argues with that? That goes without saying,” Sanders declared. “I happen to believe that there are more cost-effective ways to do that than simply building a wall.”
