First he judged Trump’s faith, now Buttigieg slams evangelicals who back Trump

Pete Buttigieg, the Democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who is aspiring to be the first openly gay president, potentially, dissed evangelicals who support President Donald Trump on Sunday, calling them hypocrites while touting his own faith.

This coming from a candidate who adopts a “no uterus, no opinion” stance when it comes to abortions, saying involvement in the matter by male government officials “is not helpful.”

While he has yet to official declare his candidacy for president, the mayor has been critical of Trump, questioning if he’s really a Christian during an interview with USA Today: “I’m reluctant to comment on another person’s faith, but I would say it is hard to look at this president’s actions and believe that they’re the actions of somebody who believes in God.”

This prompted Chuck Todd, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” to ask Buttigieg how he squares his assessment “with the fact that the evangelical community is so devoted to his candidacy.”

“It’s something that frustrates me because the hypocrisy is unbelievable,” Buttigieg said, before regurgitating Democratic talking points that undermine the president’s character, beginning with his desire to enforce immigration laws.

“Here, you have somebody who not only acts in a way that is not consistent with anything that I hear in scripture or in church, where it’s about lifting up the least among us and taking care of strangers, which is another word for immigrants,” he remarked. “And making sure that you’re focusing your effort on the poor. But also personally, how you’re supposed to conduct yourself. Not chest thumping look-at-me-ism, but humbling yourself before others. Foot washing is one of the central images in the New Testament. And we see the diametric opposite of that in this presidency.”

Buttigieg took additional jabs at evangelicals, saying Trump decided to “pretend to be pro-life… which was good enough to bring many evangelicals over to his side.”

“But even on the version of Christianity that you hear from the religious right,” he said, “which is about sexual ethics, I cannot believe that somebody who was caught writing hush money to adult film actresses is somebody they should be lifting up as the kind of person you want leading this nation.”

Speaking of pro-life, the South Bend Tribune reported that in 2018 Buttigieg stopped a pro-life clinic from opening next to an abortion clinic.

The city council voted 5-4 to allow the anti-abortion crisis pregnancy center to open, but the mayor vetoed the decision.

“Issues on the legality or morality of abortion are dramatically beyond my paygrade as a mayor,” he said. “I don’t think it would be responsible to situate two groups, literally right next to each other, in a neighborhood, that have diametrically opposed views on the most divisive social issue of our time.” reported the Democratic mayor “also failed to condemn legislation that would legalize infanticide and expand abortion access.”

“You’re not free if your reproductive choices are being dictated by male politicians in Washington,” he was quoted as saying in a recent campaign speech.

Yet Buttigieg, who considers himself a Christian and openly touts his faith, feels it’s OK to question the faith of others and call millions of fellow Christians hypocrites?
