‘Ladies Who Punch’: Inside scoop of mean girls, back stage backstabbing from ‘The View’

There’s a new book out today that has been teasing and percolating controversial excerpts for weeks now …  Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of The View, authored by Ramin Setoodeh, who is New York bureau chief for Variety.

If you like the confrontations, back-biting, and venomous cattiness that have kept The View afloat since 1997, then this tell-all could be interesting. Reviewers report that it details constant conflict and behind-the-scenes backstabbing.

It may also appeal to those researching the demise of modern civilization. Certainly the show can be afforded some of the blame for the all-pervading divisiveness in our culture today.

Shall we say that rivalries and feuds keep the women energized on the show? Hard to imagine how that might affect viewership, but the good news is that ratings have been dropping of late and we can all hope that spells doom for the program sooner than later.

It took the author three years to compile the information he needed, conducting 150 interviews of producers, agents, network executives, and show guests.

A taste of some of the reported excerpts follow, as noted by Us Magazine. Feel free to gag and spit them out as needed.

  • Favorite conservative villain Rosie O’Donnell, part of the group in seasons 10 and 18, bashed “mean” Kelly Ripa, claiming that she gay-bashed Clay Aiken in 2006.
  • O’Donnell went head to head with multiple producers on the show, including Bill Geddie, and director Mark Gentile, and she would tell the staff that Barbara Walters at 77 was “much too old to be on TV.”
  • Walters founded The View but was not a beloved figure among the ladies there as time went by. Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Joy Behar did not like when Barbara Walters was around, according to Producer Jessica Stedman Guff. “She rained on their parade,” said Guff. “It was like a bunch of sixth graders throwing s–t around the room and then the teacher walks in.” The producer added that Walters was like an “overbearing stage mom” to Matenopoulos.
  • Jenny McCarthy appeared on the show in 2013 and 2014. She whined about a time that Walters screamed at her for seven minutes about autism. She also complained that Walters tried to dress like her, and that she had to change if her outfit if didn’t complement Walters’ look. “I was a human barbie doll.”
  • McCarthy also believed that Whoopi Goldberg is a control freak and has a habit of demeaning people. “Whoopi had an addiction to controlling people’s thoughts, their words, the room, the table, your feeling, your mood,” she said.
  • O’Donnell says the show is now “unwatchable.” She says the hosts “lie for a living.” “They will just continually lie and present a false front. They would go on TV and pretend to be friends when bad things were happening. You have to talk about it.”
  • An executive for The View confided in Setoodeh that Goldberg hates the cover of the book “because it featured an illustration of her sitting at the same table as Rosie.”
  • Now here’s a head-shaker … Meghan McCain joined the show in 2017. She explained why she worked out better than other Republicans on the panel: “I’m the first real Republican that they hired. Yes, I think I’m more of a Republican that Elisabeth (Hasselbeck) is.” OK then. She also admitted she has countless pairs of heels in her dressing room, but only one that she actually owns. “The rest are owned by the show,” she said. “If I get fired, I want to be able to leave here quickly.”

Let’s hope they all leave quickly, and soon.
