Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s latest uninformed comments were roasted by an NRA News radio host who schooled the New York Democrat on her gun-grabbing ignorance.
The self-proclaimed Democratic socialist is making a second career of her steady stream of gaffes and controversial remarks and her latest on the topic of gun control added to her expanding repertoire.
Responding and linking to a report on active shooter training for Indiana teachers, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted her alternative ideas, such as the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and a ban on “bump stocks, semiautos, & high cap mags designed to kill people.”
You know, instead of training children, teachers, houses of faith, & concertgoers to prep for being shot, we could just:
-Pass Universal Background checks (#HR8!)
-Disarm domestic abusers
-Mandate safe storage
-Ban bump stocks, semiautos, & high cap mags designed to kill people https://t.co/5SaLxEfYBT— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) March 22, 2019
Naturally, many of her more than 3.6 million Twitter followers applauded her words without so much as questioning their content. But “Cam & Co” host Cam Edwards was more than happy to provide Ocasio-Cortez with a much-needed lesson in current U.S. laws and the studies that the lawmaker should probably bother to read before spouting her leftist nonsense.
Wow, that sounds so simple. And yet, the devil’s in the details.
1- How do you enforce #HR8 without a national firearms registry?
2- Domestic violence convictions or guilty pleas already result in a loss of #2A rights.
3 & 4- again, let’s talk about enforcement.

Edwards took on each of the freshman congresswoman’s points in a series of tweets.
Regarding “universal background checks”, @AOC, I don’t know if you’ve read these studies from 2018, but they show UBC laws don’t lead to fewer gun-related deaths, or even more background checks.

Citing 2018 studies on the topic of “universal background checks,” Edwards explained how the laws ” don’t lead to fewer gun-related deaths, or even more background checks.”
The studies author says it’s because of a “lack of enforcement”, but it’s not a lack of enforcement, it’s the fact that without a national firearms registry, there’s no real way TO enforce it. So, do you want a national firearms registry too?

He went on to tackle Ocasio-Cortez’s call to “Disarm domestic abusers” by pointing out that, coincidentally, a law already exists doing just that.
As for a prohibition on domestic violence abusers from owning firearms, the Lautenberg Amendment was passed in 1996 and prohibits those convicted of felony or misdemeanor domestic violence charges from legally possessing a firearm. https://t.co/zFxCWeps7d

Mandating safe storage, next on the New York Democrat’s list, highlights several other challenges, Edwards noted, besides just the constitutionality of the requirement.
“Safe storage laws are impossible to proactively enforce, unless you’re calling for random home inspections of gun owners,” he noted. “Are you?”
As for safe storage laws, you run into several issues. Leaving the constitutionality aside for a bit, I see two challenges here.
1st, safe storage laws are impossible to proactively enforce, unless you’re calling for random home inspections of gun owners. Are you?

Edwards also addressed the thorny question of how one would define what “safe storage” is.
Many states have safe storage laws, but “safe storage” may be defined differently. As I said earlier, the devil’s in the details. So how would you define “safe storage” in the federal code, and would violating the law be a misdemeanor or felony offense?

“And then you want to ban a lot of stuff,” Edwards wrote in response to the last point on Ocasio-Cortez’s list.
And then you want to ban a lot of stuff. Again, setting aside the constitutional concerns for a bit, let’s just focus on difficulties of enforcing these laws. We can even look at NY State and the SAFE Act.

Edwards unpacked more solid information citing the New York Safe Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act which has seen an amazing level of noncompliance since it was passed in 2013. In several more tweets, he noted that since the law was enacted, the “biggest impact the SAFE Act has had, legally, is that possession of a firearm without a license is now a felony, not a misdemeanor. And a disproportionate number of those charges are coming out of NYC, not upstate.”
You said after Paul Manafort was sentenced that “in our current broken system, justice isn’t blind, it’s bought.”
And yet YOU want to put more felony offenses on the books for non-violent crimes, which will disproportionately impact young men of color.

Edwards concluded his epic thread by reminding Ocasio-Cortez about “that pesky Bill of Rights” and “that our #2A rights are real, fundamental, and exercised by 100,000,000 Americans.”
“Good talk,” he concluded.
Then there’s that pesky Bill of Rights. But I know you don’t really care much about that, so I’m not gonna bother with the constitutional argument, other than to remind you that our #2A rights are real, fundamental, and exercised by 100,000,000 Americans.
Good talk.

Ocasio-Cortez’s clueless tweet and Edwards’ rebuttal scored countless reaction on Twitter, with many urging the 29-year-old congresswoman to get educated.
You realize that AOC probably didnt understand a word you wrote? For the record, well said.

Of course that not a single one of these measures would have actually prevented a single mass shooting.
— Kirby Hansen (@kirby_han) March 22, 2019
It’s nice you can repeat all the anti second amendment talking points. But maybe first you should know something about firearms. And you should reread the Constitution.

Personally, I think we should just make the mass shootings illegal …. oh wait. https://t.co/MqqBTjSD4N

How is safe storage going to help me to defend my family?? Explain that to me when you have a security team looking out for your safety all the time now ???

Semi autos are literally 90% of weapons, including most all handguns. Read a book.
