This should prove to be a timely distraction.
The actions of two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are under review after one of the officials shared a post on social media that labeled Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., as a “Trojan horse,” suggesting she is a terrorist threat.
Omar, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress in November, has been mired in controversy over anti-Semitic remarks and the Democrat-led House passed a watered-down resolution denouncing hate last week.
Leslie Derewonko, a Homeland Security Investigations senior agent, shared a post on LinkedIn that said Omar, a Somali refugee, was the product of a “refugee outbreak in Minnesota under Obama, according to ABC News. It also claimed that the newly elected congresswoman took a terrorism class — the post was tagged as “inaccurate” in the article.
“And this is what represents America?” Derewonko added in sharing the post.
The New York Post reported that “the political science department of North Dakota State University, where Omar earned her bachelor’s degree, offers a three-credit class focusing on the history, tactics and motivations of terrorist groups.”
A one-year estimate for 2017 from the Census Bureau shows there are 69,479 people in Minnesota with full or partial Somali ancestry.
As for Obama’s role, according to the State Department’s Refugee Processing Center, there were 54,514 Somali refugees that arrived in the U.S. during his two terms, with 6,320 relocating to Minnesota.
The LinkedIn post was “liked” by Jerry Templet, a top official at Homeland Security Investigations in San Francisco, according to Buzzfeed News.
A review of Derewonko’s LinkedIn page shows numerous political posts and suggests the agent is pro-Trump, pro-police and pro-America.
ABC News reported that the agent used the term “White America” multiple times in sharing posts, but did not offer any context.
According to the network, ICE doesn’t have a policy on what employees can or cannot share on social media, but the agency is looking into the offensive posts.
“Social media content posted by employees on their personal platforms should not be considered representative of agency policies or positions,” ICE spokesperson Jennifer Elzea said in a statement.
To distract from Omar’s anti-Semitism, Democrats passed a resolution on Thursday condemning all forms of hatred, to include Islamophobia, so this story serves a useful purpose as their media allies paint the actions of two agents as a reflection of not only the agency they work for, but of America as a whole.
But Media Research Center Vice President for Business and Culture Dan Gainor noted a fatal flaw in the thinking behind the LinkedIn post.
“Trojan horse included a hidden enemy. Omar isn’t hidden,” Gainor tweeted.
