Trump camp warns Dems that their barrage of abusive probes could boomerang

Some of President Donald Trump’s associates and supporters believe that congressional Democrats’ obsession with investigating the president for non-existent crimes and potentially pursuing impeachment versus drafting meaningful (and preferably not insane) legislation could and will likely backfire on them “bigly” come 2020.

“The Trump camp argues that Democrats will play into the president’s hands if they subject him, his associates and his family to an endless barrage of investigations,” The Hill reported Sunday. “Their theory — vigorously contested by critics of the president — is that such moves would bolster Trump’s case that he is being subjected to unfair attacks.”

The president’s former deputy campaign manager, David Bossie, is one of those who subscribe to this theory.

“[I]f the Democrats overreach, the American people are going to see that. They’re very smart. There will be a boomerang,” he said.

“They are trying to drain him of his resources to get things done by creating this monster investigation,” Ron Bonjean, a Republican consultant who reportedly worked with the Trump administration during Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation hearings in 2017, added.

This isn’t a new theory. Nor has it been bandied about by just Trump’s supporters. Following the midterm elections last year, Democrat Party activist and Fox News contributor Chris Hahn predicted that if Democrats pursue the route of impeachment, they’ll lose in 2020. Why? Because most Americans are concerned about real issues, not this.

“There’re people in the party that would like to see some sort of investigation, but I think the majority [of votes in the midterms] were won in suburban swing districts which want people to work on things like healthcare, changing the tax reform so it benefits the middle class and other issues that they campaigned on,” he said last December on Fox News‘ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

Listen to his full discussion with host Tucker Carlson below:

He continued by noting that impeachment isn’t “a real thing,” that the only way to remove Trump from office is by beating him at the ballot box and that the Democrats will inevitably lose the 2020 presidential election if they “waste … political capital” pursuing impeachment.

This isn’t to say that Hahn is against Democrat-led investigations, but rather that he’s seemingly wary of those investigations that are clearly aimed at impeachment:

“Democrats should investigate clear problems in his administration, so it makes it harder for him to get re-elected in 2020. If you try to impeach him without the Republicans to remove him, it’s a waste of time, it’s a waste of political capital and will lead to the Democrats losing the majority and Donald Trump being elected in 2020.”

But some would argue that even the endless investigations bode badly for Democrats. Why? Because they make him look like the victim of an actual “witch hunt” versus some allegedly corrupt criminal mastermind who, for the record, still hasn’t been found to have committed any crime.

The Democrats have grown so desperate in their pursuit of something that doesn’t appear to even exist that last week House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerry Nadler launched yet another investigation — this one into the president’s family, administration and campaign.

That’s right, even Trump’s kids are now a target. Is targeting a politician’s kids really a good idea? In fact, is any of this a good idea? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes the answer to these questions is a resounding no. His evidence? What happened to former President Bill Clinton.

“[T]he business of presidential harassment, which we were deeply engaged in in the late ’90s improved the President’s approval rating and tanked ours,” he noted last year. “Thus my observation is that it might not be a smart strategy, but it’s up to them to decide how they want to handle that.”

“Democrats in the House will have to decide just how much presidential harassment they think is good strategy. I’m not so sure it will work for them.”

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise concurred.

“If they move so far to the left that they only want to harass the president and ultimately impeach the president, that is going to backfire on them. We saw this with the Kavanaugh hearings,” he said at the time. “The danger they’re going to have is that the far left wants them to move toward resistance and ultimately impeachment of the president regardless of the facts. And that’s not where the country is.”

Democrats were unable to capture the Senate last year in part because of their “harassment” of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. And now they’ve again chosen the route of “harassment,” albeit this time toward Trump. And what do they have to show for it? According to poll averages, not much:
