McCabe opens new cans of worms: ‘It’s possible’ Trump is a Russia asset ordered by Kremlin to fire Comey

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe believes “it’s possible” that President Donald Trump is a Russian asset.

Let that sink in.

This absurd assessment coming from the man who was once the acting director of the FBI after disgraced former director James Comey was fired — of course, McCabe has a new book he’s plugging, so sensational headlines lead to a better cash flow.

McCabe, who was fired in the spring of 2017 for lying under oath about authorizing leaks to the media, appeared on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” on Tuesday and was asked by the show’s namesake, “Do you still believe the president could be a Russian asset?”

“I think it’s possible,” McCabe said. “I think that’s why we started our investigation. And I’m really anxious to see where Director Mueller concludes that.”

Cooper asked if he “still” believed this because McCabe told “60 Minutes” the FBI had reason to launch a counterintelligence probe into whether Trump was working with Russia and was a possible national security threat — keeping in mind that McCabe is the bureau official who opened the investigation.

“I was very concerned that I was able to put the Russia case on absolutely solid ground, in an indelible fashion,” he said. “That were I removed quickly, or reassigned or fired, that the case could not be closed or vanish in the night without a trace.”

It was during that interview that McCabe disclosed that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein openly discussed removing the duly elected President of the United States from office.

Not only did McCabe say Rosenstein was “absolutely serious” when he suggested he could wear a wire to secretly record Trump in the Oval Office, but that he also “raised the issue” of invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows Cabinet members to seek the removal of a president if they conclude that he is mentally unfit, to ponder if there was enough support to make it happen.

And when offering such a scandalous revelation —  Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee called it an “attempted bureaucratic coup” — you better have a good reason to justify it.

And what could be better than to claim Trump in a Russian asset?

Never mind that the Senate Intelligence Committee just announced that it has found no direct evidence of conspiracy between Trump and Russia.

No surprise, given that it’s CNN, but Cooper asked McCabe if President Trump is “fit to serve,” as if he is qualified to make that assessment.

McCabe demurred but did stand by his decision to open an investigation of Trump.

“I don’t think that’s for me to determine whether or not he’s fit to serve,” he said. “You know, our decision certainly in the FBI, the issues we confront is whether or not an investigation should be undertaken. We don’t convict people. We don’t throw people in jail. We decide when we think we need to investigate. That’s the decision I made in the somewhat crazy days in May of 2017 and it’s one I stand by.”

Again, Cooper pressed, “Is he fit to lead the FBI? Is he fit to be a commander in chief?”

“You know, I think that’s something our political leaders and the country at large will have to decide,” said the fired bureau official.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CNN that McCabe has no credibility, saying his assertion “is completely ridiculous and he knows it.”

“It’s hardly worth dignifying with a response,” she said. “He’s a known liar and leaker.”

In an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” McCabe was asked if he believed that the Russians ordered Trump to fire Comey.

His response?

“We don’t know.”

(Refer back to sensational headlines to sell books.)

It was such an irresponsible reply to suggest the president of the United States is controlled by Moscow that Mollie Hemingway, senior editor at the online magazine The Federalist, responded online to say: “Why are all our former FBI leaders so eager to display their stupidity?”
