6th grader Joshua Trump, bullied over his name, wins the night, captures hearts at SOTU

Joshua Trump, the 11-year-old State of the Union guest of President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump did what you might expect a young boy at that age to do during a long speech about politics that went way past his bedtime.

He checked out. As in copping some serious Zs.

A cuter moment could not be found in a room full of vipers and political showmen, as young Joshua essentially informed the nation that perhaps we should just chill out a bit.

The 6th grader from Wilmington, Delaware, was one of the Trumps’ 13 guests for the evening, and while each had their own incredible story — the “exceptional hardship” Joshua has been faced with is not of his own making.

Almost from the onset of Donald Trump’s run for the White House in 2015, Joshua’s life became a personal hell because of vicious bullying at school over his last name.

“They curse at him, they call him an idiot, they call him stupid,” his mother, Megan Trump, told WPVI in Philadelphia.

The bullying became so intense that Joshua’s parents took him out of public school and home-schooled him for a year. He returned this year to attend middle school, but the bullying immediately resumed.

“He said he hates himself, and he hates his last name,” his mother explained. “And he feels sad all the time, and he doesn’t want to live feeling like that anymore. As a parent that’s scary.”

Five students have been disciplined and his school agreed to change his last name in their records to reflect that of his father, Bobby Berto.

No child should have to endure such treatment over their name — he is not related to the president. The likelihood is that the bullies at school are emulating what they see at home. Sadly, children are not off-limits for those consumed with hating on President Trump, as the nation saw with the Covington Catholic High School fiasco.

This was apparent once again when grown adults took to bullying Joshua after he was invited to attend the SOTU.

But all that was swept away Tuesday night as Joshua slipped away into Dreamland as politicians do what politicians do, winning the hearts of so many Americans who yearn for a less caustic, more innocent time.
