Conservatives should abstain from adopting the left’s PC puritanism and instead remain focused on the issues that actually matter, Fox News host Laura Ingraham argued Monday.
“Republicans should not fall into this trap. Avoid the identity politics and the PC puritans. Stick to the facts and the issues. We win on those. Democrats are vulnerable on those,” she said.
She made the remarks on “The Ingraham Angle” during a monologue about the ongoing “witch hunt” being waged by the left against one of its own, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, over his behavior as a rambunctious college student back during the early 1980s.
Listen to part one of her remarks below:
Because of the recent discovery that the governor wore blackface back in college, members of the far-left — including Democrat politicians, media pundits and celebrities — have been demanding he resign. While some establishment Republicans have joined the chorus, Ingraham maintains that they should stay out of the matter altogether and stick to what actually matters.
Why? For one, the left’s growing PC puritanism has repeatedly stymied debate and prevented the Trump administration from implementing otherwise sensible policies such as the construction of a southern U.S. wall, the repeal of DACA and the implementation of a travel ban.
“In their America, the wall is racist,” she noted. “Deporting illegals is racist. ICE is racist. Century-old monuments, they’re racist. Assimilation, definitely racist. Requiring English be spoken, absolutely racist. College Indian mascots, oh, they were way racist.”
The puritanism has also affected broader culture.
“Way beyond blackface, many costumes are now racist,” she correctly added, highlighting the left-wing outrage that spawns anytime someone dons a non-PC Halloween costume.
Listen to part two of her remarks below:
While it’s tempting to throw Northam under the bus for his behavior as a veritable kid — especially given the despicable way he smeared his GOP opponent in the midterm elections last year — Republicans shouldn’t do so because to do so would mean condoning this insane puritanism.
“It’s easy for Republicans to kind of sit on the sidelines here and kind of laugh, ‘He deserves it. Glad they got him. Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha,'” Ingraham argued. “I don’t like any of this stuff.”
“I don’t like the fact that this becomes someone’s entire life, whether it’s a photo or an offhand statement, made years ago or recently. … I don’t like when Republicans are sending this stuff around on social media, reveling in the moment. I don’t think that’s the way to go.”
She added that this idea that someone can be branded a racist just because of his or her past behavior as a child is patently insane. Northam’s own friends appear to agree.
“You’ve had so many people to say that they have not seen a racist bone in his body and I can attest to that from 1972,” the governor’s childhood friend, Carla Savage-Wells, said Monday to CNN host to Chris Cuomo, adding that it’s “completely inaccurate” to label him a racist.
“This is my take on it. He felt compelled to apologize for whatever actions he may have had as a child, and we know that 25 is not 18. But anybody that’s 45 and has a mortgage knows that 25 is not grown.”
Her point was that Northam was just a kid at the time. He’s now a 59-year-old father and possible grandfather, and this idea that it makes sense to label the Northam of now an unrepentant racist (if not a white supremacist) over actions he took 34 years ago is insane.
Listen to some of her statement below:
Ingraham agreed with Savage-Wells’ assessment.
“I think to say someone is a racist because of what they did in med school with a Halloween costume, I don’t think that’s going to go into a good place for this country,” she said.
She wasn’t wrong. Thanks to the left’s PC puritanism, nearly everything has been labeled bigoted, racist and hateful, including but not limited to “insensitive” jokes, camels on campus, acts of kindness and political cartoons. Breathing in clean air is reportedly also racist.
It’s insanity, in Ingraham’s opinion, though she’s not the only one who feels this way.

@IngrahamAngle Thank God! Finally! Laura is right. We don’t need to join the left in their phony P.C. puritanism. I’m so tired of watching all these phony people on the right on FOX demanding that Ralph Northam resign for that stupid photo. #IngrahamAngle

No one actually thinks that Northam’s racist in any meaningful sense of the word. They’re virtue-signaling so they can say their racial puritanism is deeply principled b/c they’ll condemn their own. No Dem gains from defending him. At least McAuliffe (who sux) stix by his friends

This nation’s Puritan legacy has imposed deleterious effects on many aspects of American life from the very beginning of this country’s history. And it doesn’t reflect the culture and ethics of millions of American citizens, including mine. #Northamhttps://t.co/EmfuHc0uZN

@TheDemCoalition @TheDemocrats @vademocrats If we are going to take a Puritan stance every time we discover that one of us has been imperfect in the past, there will not be enough of us left to elect to anything! #Northam

Maybe if he doesn’t resign we it will end this crazy culture war or ratchet it down a bit, at least. It always helps when the town puritan fascist police turn out to be hypocrites. It takes away their power.

So what should Republicans focus on, if not Northam’s past behavior? His recent remarks on infanticide, Ingraham asserted Monday.
“Don’t be deceived — this whole effort is, in fact, a smokescreen, my friends. It’s a party-wide effort to distract from the Democrat’s real liabilities,” she said.
“I think their atrocious policies are what we should be focusing on. Let’s not forget how he came to national prominence last week. It was his abhorrent defense of the Democrats’ abortion-on-demand at all stages agenda,” she concluded.
