Rep. Eric Swalwell became the next in an increasingly long line of liberals accidentally making the case for a border wall.
The California Democrat missed his target in a tweet Thursday attempting to use the U.S. Capitol as proof for why a wall is not needed at the U.S.-Mexico border, and got a fiery takedown from the president’s son.
If you’ve been to the U.S. Capitol, close your eyes. Do you remember a wall around it? But do you remember officers guarding it? Cameras? And barriers at vulnerable points? Do you believe our Capitol is at any risk of an invasion? We don’t need a wall, we need smart security.
— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) January 24, 2019
Perhaps Swalwell, a member of the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, had a different image in mind, but most Americans – even with eyes closed – could easily picture government buildings in Washington, D.C.

The point is they put up barriers when they think it’s a security risk: exhibit A: what is that denying me access to the steps of Capital Hill? I do believe that’s a barrier. And yes there were 2 very nice DC officers on the other side making sure no one got over them. Took 10/18 pic.twitter.com/tikyZbeD2y

Swalwell seemed confused about what actually borders the Capitol.
Today I learned that DC apparently borders a foreign country, according to this congressional source –>https://t.co/YzQLlyCkty

Last time checked the us capitol wasn’t on the Texas/Mexico border… ?
— Chris Geary (@CJGeary) January 25, 2019
Genius politician fails to grasp the fact that the U.S. Capitol doesn’t border a foreign country. https://t.co/Xy2MhTZQXv

Donald Trump Jr. schooled the congressman on what is actually beyond the Capitol building.
The Capitol is surrounded by AMERICA you dolt. I get that based on your policies and positions, you probably look at Americans as a hostile force, but I can assure you they aren’t invading their Capitol…They just sent @realDonaldTrump there to fix it. https://t.co/K5VyXfXxiO

Twitter users quickly took Swalwell on a fact-finding journey, and explained the idea of walls, gates, security and barriers.
And the White House has a large fence around it too, FYI. For security.

Not sure this is a great argument. If you try to enter the Capitol through an unauthorized entrance without a pass, you’re gonna get removed or arrested. https://t.co/6kQHbbqK14
— Nathan, son of Robert (@NathanWurtzel) January 25, 2019
Yes #EricSwalwell, as I recall it’s got walls and the only way in is through the doors which are guarded and ID’s are checked. If you get caught trying to come through a window things won’t go well for you. https://t.co/mrAx8ZPz6h
— Milo™ (@chasbottom) January 24, 2019
Well considering it’s a building, by its nature it’s made of walls so yes I do remember seeing walls. I don’t recall seeing Congress working outside these “walls” where anyone could just walk up to them.
— Edward Reilly (@EPR3) January 24, 2019
I then had to get a ticket for entry, which was time sensitive, and had to wait in line until it was my turn to enter the tour. No line jumping. Honestly Congressman, how far did you want to take this? Did you think this out?
— Edward Reilly (@EPR3) January 25, 2019
But at least the Democrat’s foolish tweet ended up doing exactly the opposite of what he aimed for.
It’s almost like barriers exist to protect the things inside…
My house has walls because well, not only are they needed to shield my family from the elements, the locks keep bad guys out. ?
— Some random thoughts (@someideasnstuff) January 25, 2019
Is this guy a total idiot? You know how much more it would cost our country to put the equivalent level of security that exists around the Capitol along the entire border? The need for a physical barrier is precisely because it cannot be policed. ? https://t.co/R1XaKjdtci
— Jeff Ballabon (@ballabon) January 25, 2019
“Barriers at vulnerable points.”
You realize that you’re making the argument for a border security system that includes walls/barriers/steel slats at certain points, right?
Which is exactly what the president asked for last weekend and exactly what your Speaker turned down. https://t.co/PXBHRcaa0y
— Virginia Kruta (@VAKruta) January 24, 2019
Wait. What? The Capitol complex is secured behind the USCP, barricades, bollards, pop up barriers, security doors, metal detectors, electronic surveillance, and more USCP officers. Are you proposing the same level of funding per square foot for the border that the Capitol enjoys?
— Jeff (@jdtharp) January 25, 2019
If you’ve ever been to the floor of the House chamber, close your eyes. Do you remember a wall around it? And guards and cameras? Yes, because it’s in the U.S. Capitol, a structure made of… WALLS. That’s why it has not been invaded. ?

It also provided plenty of entertainment on Twitter.
This is the kind of idiocy that wins elections in CA and NY. https://t.co/Z9QjW01A6U

Don’t forget private communities or prisons or mental wards or any place you want to defer people from walking right on in or out…continues to be so stupid he should just quit and run for Pres 2020 so we can have more laughs…

While enjoying your 3-day weekend, perhaps you should ponder your thoughts a little deeper and avoid tweeting things like this next week. You just showed everyone what a dumbass you are! But I bet you thought you were so clever with this little nugget…
