The left pounced as reports broke the news that Roger Stone had been arrested by FBI agents, but many questioned one glaring omission.
The former political adviser to President Trump was arrested Friday after being indicted by a federal grand jury on seven counts including obstruction, making false statements and witness tampering in the ongoing investigation into Russian collusion.
Even as some questioned how CNN was on-scene at the pre-dawn arrest of the 66-year-old Trump ally at his Florida home, “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy asked, in looking at the charges leveled against Stone, “Where is the Russian collusion?”
The 24-page indictment released by special counsel Robert Mueller’s office alleged that Stone made false statements to the House Intelligence Committee in its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election as well as questioning his knowledge of hacked Democrat emails released by WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign. Stone has denied the accusations and the indictment does not actually charge him with working with WikiLeaks.
“Everyone was speculating, ‘When is the investigation going to be complete? When is the special counsel going to wrap everything up?’” Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt wondered on Friday. “What does this mean for that now? Does this mean it drags out for even more months? Because there were already rumors that it could end in February, that he could be turning in his findings in February—who knows?”
“When you look at these seven counts from the grand jury: Obstruction of an official investigation, false statements to Congress, and perhaps witness tampering, once again, where is the Russia collusion?” co-host Doocy demanded.
“Right, is it a process crime based on the investigation,” co-host Ed Henry interjected.
After more than a year and half, Mueller’s investigation has looked into Trump associates and their alleged financial crimes before the election as well as a collection of false statement charges. None, however, were charged with crimes related to collusion – a fact that resurfaced as news broke about Stone.
