One of the Democrat Party’s most notorious religious bigots has doubled down on her clear-cut disdain for Catholicism, suggesting in a shocking statement made on the Senate floor that the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization is a part of the neo-Nazi-affiliated “alt-right.”
Sen. Mazie Hirono issued the statement last Wednesday in response to a resolution unveiled by Sen. Ben Sasse that called for reaffirming the constitutionally guaranteed right to religious freedom.
“If my colleague, the junior Senator from Nebraska, wants to embrace the alt-right’s position by offering this resolution, that is his business,” she said, according to a transcript of the day’s proceedings.
Her astounding statement justifiably sent shockwaves through Congress and social media:
From a Sasse spokesman this morning: “Senator Hirono is recklessly using the label ‘alt-right’ to smear 2 million Catholics who volunteer in their communities. It’s laughably stupid, but it’s also insulting to the folks who face hate from the actual alt-right and neo-nazis.”

The whole controversy over religious bigotry started last month when Hirono and fellow Democrat Sen. Kamala Harris harangued a district court nominee over his affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, a 136-year-old Catholic fraternal organization.
“The Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions. For example, it was reportedly one of the top contributors to California’s Proposition 8 campaign to ban same-sex marriage,” Hirono said in a written statement to nominee Brian Buescher. “If confirmed, do you intend to end your membership with this organization to avoid any appearance of bias?”
She essentially suggested that Buescher would need to detach himself from his Catholic beliefs to be viable for a position on the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska.
There’s a word for this: religious bigotry. And hearing religious bigotry being spewed by one of his colleagues was enough to spur Sasse into unveiling a resolution last Wednesday to reaffirm the right to religious freedom and condemn the religious bigotry of those who’d suggest that the largest Catholic fraternal group in the world is somehow an extremist organization.
“I want senators to unanimously reaffirm our oath of office to a Constitution that rejects religious bigotry,” Sasse said in a fiery speech on the Senate floor. “It is useful to regularly remind ourselves that Americans are a First Amendment people. Each of the five freedoms in the First Amendment: speech, press, religion, assembly, protest, they define who we are.”
“This is nuts,” he continued. “We’re talking about the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world being called an extremist organization and a nominee for the federal bench being asked if he would resign from this organization so that he could serve without the appearance of bias.”
“The clear implication was that Brian’s religious beliefs and his religious affiliations, in this case, an affiliation with the Catholic organization that invests countless hours and millions of dollars annually serving special needs kids,” made him “potentially unfit for federal service,” Sasse concluded.”
Listen to part one of his speech:
Part two of Sasse’s speech continues below:
It was these poignant words which inspired Hirono to recklessly toss out the word “alt-right” and — in doing so — smear the at least 1.8 million Catholics who’re members of the Knights of Columbus, including notable figures such as NFL coach Mike Ditka and Fox News host Steve Doocy.
And included among the club’s deceased members are former President John F. Kennedy and former Sen. Ted Kennedy. Both of them were Democrats.
JFK was a Knight of Columbus as well

They conveniently forget that JFK was Catholic

Ah yes, the Democrats of old have returned…@KamalaHarris & @maziehirono anti-Catholic bigotry shows in their attack on the Knights of Columbus and its members. JFK is turning in his grave! I will pray for these bigots, someone has to!

@KamalaHarris and @maziehirono you probably have no idea that the following people were affiliated with the Knights Of Columbus: Pres. John F. Kennedy, Sen. Ted Kennedy, Sargent Shriver, Vince Lombardi, Babe Ruth, Floyd Patterson, Lenny Wilkens, just to name a few…

It’s unclear whether Hirono would accuse these Democrats of being “alt-right” goons and thugs. Noting her record of patently insane remarks, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the answer to that question were, yes.
