Premature rejection: Pelosi and her fellow Dems answered Trump’s compromise before he even spoke

If President Donald Trump’s goal in laying out a grand compromise to end the ongoing government shutdown had been to show the world that congressional Democrats are a bunch of stubborn, arrogant, intransigent jackasses, then it appears he’s succeeded with flying colors.

So just how stubborn and intransigent are they? So much so that their head honcho, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, prematurely rejected the compromise before the president even presented it.

In a statement published to Twitter moments before Trump’s compromise speech began Saturday afternoon, Pelosi flat-out said the deal was a no-go.

“Unfortunately, initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total, do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people’s lives,” she said.

She wasn’t the only one to prematurely reject Trump’s deal.

Here’s what Sen. Richard Blumental tweeted at 3:19 pm:

And here’s what Sen. Dick Durbin tweeted at 2:39 pm:

Their congressional peers, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, at least had the decency to wait until after Trump’s speech to deliver their rejections.

Look:

The consensus among the Democrats is clear, no matter the timing: They have no interest in negotiating anything. It’s either their way or the highway. Sounds mature.

The irony is that they sound as stubborn and intransigent as the immigration hardliners among Trump’s base whom they often accuse of  being “radical.” These allegedly “radical” hard liners have also rejected on the deal, albeit on the basis that it offers the Democrats too much.

Listen to the relevant portion of the president’s grand compromise speech below:

The deal would specifically give the Democrats three years of protection for DACA and TPS recipients in addition to $800 in funding for humanitarian assistance. All this would be provided in exchange for $5.7 billion in border wall funding. Sounds fair, right?

Not to “radical” immigration hardliners. And wouldn’t you know it, the allegedly moderate, sensible and open-minded Democrats agree with the hardliners. So who’s really radical, huh?

By being so intransigent, the Democrats may have inadvertently acted exactly as the president had hoped they would, according to some social media users:

And if this had indeed been Trump’s goal, then kudos to him, because it seemingly worked, all thanks to the impatient intransigence of Democrats like Nancy “Quick Fingers” Pelosi.

Well played, Mr. President.
