President Trump to make ‘major announcement’ Saturday about border and government shutdown

President Donald Trump teased that he would soon be making a “major announcement” about the “Humanitarian Crisis” at the southern U.S. border and the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The president tweeted Friday that on Saturday afternoon he would address the more than four-week shutdown and the issues at the border, just as another caravan of Honduran migrants makes its way into Mexico, headed for the U.S.

Trump’s message came a few minutes after the White House called a “lid” on the day’s news, according to reporters who thought they were done for the day.

Later on Friday evening, the president posted a video of himself addressing the humanitarian and “national security crisis” at the southern border, noting gang members, human traffickers and drug smugglers who are trying to cross into the Unites States illegally.

“We don’t want them in our country,” Trump said.

“Take the politics out of it, let’s get to work and let’s make a deal,” he added, obviously reaching out to Democrats who have refused to negotiate with the president on his demands for more than $5 billion to fund the building of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Democratic leaders have come under fire for rejecting appeals from Trump while the partial government shutdown continues, leaving federal employees without pay even as lawmakers retreat out of Washington, D.C. each weekend rather than hunker down and come to an agreement. Congressional leaders came under fire for a recent trip by some Democrats to Puerto Rico where they enjoyed leisure activities amid meetings with local leaders.

Trump grounded House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a delegation of Democrats headed on an “excursion” to Egypt, Brussels and Afghanistan on Thursday, telling Pelosi in a letter that “postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate.”

“We have to secure our southern border. If we don’t do that, we’re a very, very sad and foolish lot,” Trump concluded in the video he posted Friday.

His tweet about an impending announcement instantly sparked speculation about what Trump would be saying and whether he would be announcing any major moves by the administration.

Some wondered if Trump would be declaring a national emergency, as he once suggested he could do, in order to secure the funding to build the wall.

Many Twitter users expressed their support for the president as they looked forward to his announcement.
