Behar bizarrely compares de Blasio to a Republican, then Whoopi lays down the hammer: ‘You screwed the city up!’

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was probably not expecting the grilling he received in a recent appearance on “The View.”

The Democrat faced off with the ABC talk show’s co-hosts, finding himself on the defensive about many of his policies which Whoopi Goldberg declared “screwed the city up.”

While de Blasio was called out over changes he had made, he still managed to tout his progressive agenda during his visit with the “The View” Wednesday. He was even strangely praised by co-host Joy Behar for his socialist health care plan which gives illegal immigrants access to free health care.

The mayor bragged about his plan and stated that health care was a “universal right” before co-host Abby Huntsman pressed him about the effectiveness of his plan.

“Are you concerned about abuse? None of these programs are perfect,” Huntsman asked, with a reference to the problem of homelessness in the city. “If you have people flocking here, how do you pay for that?”

But the mayor was confident of the plan’s success, absurdly claiming that illegal immigrants would prefer to go somewhere “warmer” than come pouring into New York City. He pushed back on co-host Meghan McCain’s argument that he could encounter the same problems that the Department of Veterans Affairs has faced.

“We’re closer to the ground and we’re accountable to our own people and our public health system is working better and better,” he asserted.

“You know what, you sound-like a Republican a little bit because they believe in small government and you’re saying do it on the local level,” Behar interjected. “You’re starting to sound like a Republican!”

The inane comparison of a leftist mayor’s socialist plan to Republicans and small government was not lost on McCain who noted the two were nothing alike. De Blasio laughed off the remark and said he assumed Behar “means that in the best way.”

Goldberg quickly doused Behar’s gush-fest and gave de Blasio a piece of her mind.

“Know what’s really pissing me off… you built 83 miles or protected bike lanes. I like bikes, I like people who ride, but I don’t think you understand the impact of taking something like Tenth Avenue, which is six lanes, down to two and a half,” she complained. “Particularly when you have a winter storm and you can’t move. None of that is movable.”

“This is an issue and you haven’t taken down the size of the trucks … We got nine-block-long trucks delivering, and they can’t make the turns. What feasibility study did you all do when you decided to put these [lanes] in?” she pressed.

“Listen, you go through the city with a police escort,” Goldberg went on. “And I am just saying you might want to take a look at all of this.”

She also made it clear what she thought about the “issue” of wearing bike helmets.

“Also, I’m upset that you love these bikes but you don’t tell people to put a helmet on,” she said as the mayor sat silently. “This is an issue.”

The mayor sat silently through most of Goldberg’s lecture but after hearing her out on congested lanes, oversized trucks and bike lanes, de Blasio spoke up about how his plans have been aimed at reducing traffic crashes and fatalities.

“In 1910, there were more horses than cars in New York City. Every year since then, the traffic fatalities went up and up. We brought it down to the level of 1910 because these bike lanes slow down the traffic,” he said.

“But you screwed the city up!” Goldberg fired back.
