Trump was always going to get the blame for shutdown: Why new liberal polls are pointless

The problem with the political class when it comes to President Donald Trump is that they think… well, like the political class.

New polling shows most Americans understand that the president is the driving factor behind the ongoing partial government shutdown — the longest in US history.

Which only proves that folks are more perceptive than the media gives them credit for, given that Trump boldly took ownership of the shutdown before it began.

Speaking before the press during a meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the president was very clear that the issue of border security was paramount.

“I am proud to shut down the government for border security because the people of this country don’t want criminals and people that have lots of problems, and drugs pouring into our country,” Trump said.

“So I will take the mantle,” the president continued. “I will be the one to shut it down. I will take the mantle of shutting it down and I will shut it down for border security.”

Can’t be any more clear than that.

Not being a politician, the president is focused on solving the nation’s problems, not governing by the latest poll and this is what endears Trump to so many.

Besides, as President Harry S. Truman once said, “The buck stops here.”

The American people expect their president to take charge in difficult times, holding the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. accountable for the nation’s well being.

It’s not like the anti-Trump media isn’t going to fault the president. That was evident when he moved to get American troops out of the endless wars in the Middle East — a move that would have been praised by the liberal media had it come from Trump’s predecessor.

We see this media spin in a new CNN poll that declares, “Trump bears most blame for shutdown.” The poll’s results show that 55 percent of respondents say he is more responsible for the shutdown.

A Huffington Post/YouGov poll shows 57 percent of Americans hold Trump at least partially responsible for the shutdown. The more important finding here may be that 75 percent of Republicans polled say Trump is right to hold out for funding for a wall.

Trump could have forced the GOP to act on a funding for a border wall while they were still in power, so he bears some blame here — it goes without saying that weak-kneed Republicans more concerned with getting reelected than they are with leading are at fault.

As an outsider, the president firmly believes this is a winning issue with the American people. Even with the media working overtime to oppose his efforts, doing the bidding of the Democratic Party.

Nowhere is this more apparent than the media echoing the Democrat’s talking point that illegal immigration is not a crisis.

In what bizarre world must one reside where 12-20 million illegal immigrants roam freely about, with the government having few clues as to who these people are, not a crisis? Where Americans are killed by the hundreds every year by criminals having no business being in the country. Often by people who have been deported multiple times.

And this doesn’t take into account the economic impact of illegal immigration, be it driving down wages for low-income Americans or costing taxpayers tens of billions of dollars to provide for their well being.

But for a complicit media, this position would not even be tenable.

In the end, Trump may represent the last opportunity this country has in a long time to fix the mess that our immigration system has become — a mess ushered in by the same political class fighting him every step of the way as he tries to impose what would be seen in a more sane world as common sense solutions.
