Trump announces trip to southern US border. Smart move?

As the partial government shutdown drags into its third week, President Donald Trump is set to travel to the southern U.S. border in a few days.

With details promised to be coming soon, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced that Trump will travel to the U.S.-Mexico border “to meet with those on the frontlines of the national security and humanitarian crisis.”

Sanders tweeted the announcement Monday as Democratic leaders continue to stand against the president’s request for $5.7 billion in funding for the wall to be included in a spending bill and passed by Congress. Democrats refuse to agree to any bill that contains funding for the wall, and Trump says he will veto any that does not contain the provision.

Ahead of Thursday’s planned trip, the president will address the nation in televised remarks as he highlights border security amid the standoff.

After a weekend filled with meetings seeking to end the shutdown, Trump pitched the idea of a steel wall instead of a concrete barrier hoping to get Democrats to move forward in negotiations.

The president tweeted a meme announcing that a wall is coming and also tweeted his repeated contention that walls work.

David Rubin, a former mayor in Israel, backed Trump’s claims in an interview Monday on “Fox & Friends.”

“Well, if you want to understand whether walls work, Israel is a tremendous example,” he said, noting that in the first year after a barrier was built in Israel, illegal entry into the nation was cut almost to nothing.
