Democrats to block ‘mega-package’ pro-Israel bill that once had bi-partisan support

Democrats are apparently so concerned about the government shutdown that they essentially just voted to prolong it.

A “mega package” of pro-Israel legislation was scheduled for a vote by top Republicans in the Senate but Democrats quickly announced they would oppose any consideration of the measures, according to The Washington Free Beacon.

Maryland Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said they would be against a vote on the pro-Israel bills which addressed Israel and Jordan’s security as well as any attempts to boycott Israel following President Trump’s announcement of his plan to pull U.S. forces out of Syria in the near future.

With many incoming Democrats in Congress openly opposed to Israel and the Jewish people, the actions set the stage for what could be a battle more established members of the party would rather avoid.

Sanders criticized as “absurd” the bill which includes legislation that would oppose BDS, the anti-Israel Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment movement which engages in economic boycotts on Israel and the Jewish people.

Democrats have a new crop of socialists on hand, and lawmakers like Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who replaced Keith Ellison and denied that she held anti-Israel views during her election bid, had her campaign tell Muslim Girl that “Ilhan believes in and supports the BDS movement” right after she was elected.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer last year condemned the movement as a form of anti-Semitism while speaking at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual policy conference.

“When there is such a double standard when the world treats everybody one way and the Jew or the Jewish state another way, there’s only one word for it: anti-Semitism.” the New York Democrat said.

Democrats opposing pro-Israel bills that have received bipartisan support in previous Congresses will have to face much criticism if their current stand adds to the impasse in lifting the federal shutdown.

A senior congressional official expressed confusion over why Democrats would opt for blocking the security measures and risk prolonging the government shutdown.

“Democrats should be all over this thing. These are bills Rand Paul tried to block, so they could talk about divisions on our side,” the source told the Free Beacon. “It’s about bolstering allies endangered around Syria, so they could use it to hit Trump for withdrawing troops. And it’s pro-Israel without having anything to do with the peace process, so they get easy votes. But their progressive base hates Israel so much these are apparently tough votes they want to avoid.”
