A day after former House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was voted in as the next speaker of the House, she made what some consider to be a grievous error in judgment — one that could conceivably stir up many complications for her as the new legislative session begins.
During an MSNBC town hall Friday evening at Trinity University in Washington, D.C., the power-hungry speaker was asked by a student whether she supports the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
“Well, I support the recognition that black lives matter, for sure, and I have incorporated that in many of my statements” Pelosi promptly responded, before making the mistake of continuing.
“I think all lives matter, yes. But there has — we really have to redress past grievances in terms of how we have addressed the African-American community.”
Listen to her full answer below:
“I had a real privilege yesterday to address the swearing-in of the new black caucus members,” she added. “At least eight new members were elected from places that are not majority-black communities. So this was a real breakthrough.”
“So I think that we’re all, you know, working together to make sure that every part of our community — whether it’s the immigrant community, whether it’s the black community, whether it’s the women’s community and the rest — not only matter but rule.”
While her statement may have sounded sensible to those looking in from the outside, to the radical far-left the statement reeked of glaring ignorance and unrepentant white supremacy.
Look:
wow @SpeakerPelosi actually managed to work the stereotypical, white-supremist response to #BlackLivesMatter into a public statement
(and, yes, “all lives matter” is basically white supremacy talking)
she is every bit the pathetic joke that we expected her to be, and more https://t.co/qmd9noR1V9

You’re right, Nancy Pelosi is so cosmically dumb that she has never learned that the phrase “all lives matter” is a white nationalist dog whistle. As a well trained politician, she should never be expected to be sensitive to the issues in a racially charged environment

I support you @SpeakerPelosi but drop the “all lives matter” propaganda. Because all lives are not treated the same in the U.S. and the black & brown populations of our country are suffering far worse than the white population. https://t.co/UUYu0DmPK9

@SpeakerPelosi, “All Lives Matter” is inappropriate because it’s an obtuse response to “Black Lives Matter”. The meaning of “Black Lives Matter” is that police in this country don’t treat black lives as though they matter. You’re supposed to validate black lives by echoing BLM.

#NancyPelosi @SpeakerPelosi Disappointing response to the question:”Do you support #BlackLivesMatter . “All lives matter” & remarks about Black politicians elected in majority White communities show your ignorance or disinterest. It’s about police abuse of Black ppl / communities

Lost me at “all lives matter.” Pelosi is too smart of a politician and a careful speaker for that to have been anything but a deliberate move away from BLM and appeal to racists.

SO very disappointed to hear @SpeakerPelosi do the “all lives matter” copout in her townhall on @MSNBC. Et tu Nancy?

When @SpeakerPelosi was asked about Black Lives Matter, responding that “all lives matter” was the wrong answer. @JoyAnReid should have smacked her upside the head for not talking about unequal policing.

Nancy is politically astute. She knows what “all lives matter” means. That was some racist bullshit.

The bizarre beliefs expressed above are rooted in the fervent conviction by far-left activists that primarily black men and women are killed by the police and/or suffer from police brutality.
Note that the two are not the same. Some shootings are justified. When a St. Louis police officer killed black suspect Michael Brown five years ago, that shooting was justified, despite erroneous claims otherwise from the far-left. It was these very claims that led to the formation of BLM.
Moreover, the notion that it’s primarily blacks who wind up dead at the hands of cops is patently false, as noted in a report two years ago about conservative columnist Larry Elder.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control, since 1968 police killings of blacks have declined nearly 75 percent,” he wrote at the time. “According to The Washington Post, almost 500 whites were killed by cops in 2015, an average of more than one a day. Two hundred fifty-nine blacks were killed by the police. Most suspects killed by police had a weapon.”
These facts have never really concerned those with aligning with BLM. To them, their own false beliefs are the only “facts” that matter. And according to these beliefs, denoting that “all lives matter” — i.e., saying that actual police brutality (which is rare) should be experienced by nobody — is racist.
As a result, the chances that Pelosi will face political blowback for her “all lives matter” remark are high. She wouldn’t be the first. During the last presidential election, then-Democrat presidential candidate Martin O’Malley faced scathing backlash after he declared “all lives matter.”
“Several dozen demonstrators interrupted the former Maryland governor while he was speaking … at the Netroots Nation conference, a gathering of liberal activists, demanding that he address criminal justice and police brutality,” CNN reported in 2015.
“When they shouted, ‘Black lives matter!’ a rallying cry of protests that broke out after several black Americans were killed at the hands of police in recent months, O’Malley responded: ‘Black lives matter. White lives matter. All lives matter.'”
He faced so much criticism for this that he was later forced to beg for forgiveness:
It’s very likely Pelosi will be forced to do the same sometime sooner rather than later.
