President Trump triggered liberals by saying he might declare a national emergency to build a border wall, citing national security reasons.
“We can call a national emergency because of the security of our country,” Trump said. “I can do it if I want. I haven’t done it, I may do it.”
However, President Trump said he prefers to get the wall funding through a negotiated process with obstructionist Democrats to end the Schumer Shutdown.
Trump Has Authority to Declare Emergency

No. 1 Job of US President Is National Security
Naturally, liberals got triggered by Trump’s suggestion that he could get the border wall built as a matter of national security. Keep in mind that the No. 1 job of the US President is to keep Americans safe.
Accordingly, President Trump has broad authority — guaranteed under the United States Constitution — to take measures to safeguard national security.
A president can — at his discretion — declare that the nation is in a state of national emergency.
Given the heavy financial burdens and criminal costs of illegal immigration borne by US taxpayers ($113 billion a year and 5,475 Americans murdered every year by illegals), Trump has a solid argument for declaring a national emergency and building the border wall — without the support of obstructionist Democrats.
University of Texas law professor Steve Vladeck tweeted that Trump is wrong, citing an irrelevant case about seizure of private property.
“It didn’t end well for the President,” Steve Vladeck gleefully chirped.
The Supreme Court case that Vladeck referenced (Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer) concerned president Harry Truman’s 1952 seizure of steel mills during a worker strike.

Harvard Law Prof: Trump On Solid Legal Ground
The Supreme Court later ruled that the president doesn’t have the constitutional authority to seize private property. That makes sense…but how’s that relevant to the border crisis?
Meanwhile, Harvard Law professor Mark Tushnet said President Trump is on “very solid legal ground.”
“The Department of Defense has funds in its account that are not specifically designated for anything,” Tushnet told NBC News. “My instinct is to say that if he declares a national emergency and uses this pot of unappropriated money for the wall, he’s on very solid legal ground.”
According to the leftist website the Atlantic: “From seizing control of the internet to declaring martial law, President Trump may legally do all kinds of extraordinary things.”
Don’t forget about the opioid epidemic that kills countless Americans every year. Most of those illegal drugs come through our porous borders.
In 2017, there were 70,237 drug overdose deaths in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Why don’t open-borders liberals care about this national emergency?
