Doesn’t take long for Ocasio-Cortez to tout ‘radical’ status, suggest up to 70% tax for ‘tippy top’ wealthy

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is finally revealing how she thinks one of her agenda items should be funded.

The self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist suggested the environmental agenda known as the “Green New Deal” could be funded by taxing the super wealthy – the ‘tippy tops” – at a substantially higher rate.

The freshman lawmaker from New York explained her proposal in a released segment of an upcoming CBS “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper. She touted the “ambitious” plan that will “require a lot of rapid change” that seems impossible

“What is the problem with trying to push our technological capacities to the furthest extent possible?” she asked.

She also asserted that people would have to “start paying their fair share” of taxes.

And by people, one would expect Ocasio-Cortez is not talking about illegal immigrants who live in the U.S. without ever paying a cent in personal income taxes, but those at the top of the economic food chain. Cooper questioned whether her plan required more taxes and her answer included a look at the progressive tax rate system of the 1960s.

“You know, you look at our tax rates back in the sixties, and when you have an aggressive tax rate system, your tax rate from zero to $75,000 may be 10 percent or 15 percent, etcetera,” Ocasio-Cortez explained.

“But once you get to the tippy tops, on your $10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 percent or 70 percent,” she went on. “That doesn’t mean all $10 million are taxed at an extremely high rate. But it means that as you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more.”

Cooper noted that her plan was a “radical agenda compared to the way politics is done right now.”

The 29-year-old didn’t blink in comparing herself to the “radicals that have changed this country,” citing the examples of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The “Green New Deal” proposes to completely eliminate carbon emissions in the U.S. within 12 years.

“Do you call yourself a radical?” Cooper asked.

“Yeah, if that’s what radical means, call me a radical,” she replied.
