The Lindsey Graham who reared his head during the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearings made an encore appearance in response to the government shutdown over border security, saying Democrats are acting “like children” and calling on President Trump to “break ’em now.”
Appearing Friday on Fox News, the Republican senator from South Carolina had three words for the GOP, host Shannon Bream explained: “Let’s dig in.”
“Number one, when you make a promise to the American people, you should keep it,” Graham said. “The one thing I like about President Trump, he is trying his best to keep his promise. He promised to build a wall, and he is going to fight hard to keep that promise. After the caravan, if you don’t see the need for more border security, you are blind.”
Graham said Democrats are so driven by hatred of Trump that they’re willing to “sacrifice” what’s good for the country, but the best thing the president can do is to fight back hard.
“Here’s the problem,” he said. “I think Democrats hate Trump so much they want him to lose (on the issue), even though it would be good for the country to work with him on border security.”
“And if he doesn’t break ’em now, it’s going to be a terrible 2019,” Graham added. “So Mr. President, dig in.”
He also repeated that message on social media.
“It’s right to fight for wall funding,” Graham tweeted. “The House-passed bill is reasonable. Let’s Dig in!”

As for any compromise between the $5 billion Trump has asked for and the $1.6 billion Democrats are willing to agree to, the lawmaker said Democrats will pay the price.
“If they are not willing to work with the president, I think they are going to hear it from the American people in 2020,” Graham said, before stating unequivocally that Trump is in the right here.
“I don’t think I am thought of up here is some radical guy, but if you don’t see the need for more border security, then you are just not paying attention,” he added. “The president of the United States is right to want more money to secure our borders, to build the wall as part of border security. Democrats are wrong to act like children, to say you can’t get a penny more.”
Graham also said it may be now or never.
“Our country is under threat from drugs, crime and maybe terrorists coming across the southern border,” Graham insisted. “So, the Freedom Caucus, I stand with them. I stand with the president. I’m glad he picked this fight. If we do not stand up now to make sure we get more money for the wall, we will never get any more next year.”
When Bream responded to say that it’s up in the air how the stalemate is going to end, Graham put his Nostradamus hat on and predicted the outcome.
“I will tell you how it ends,” he said. “President Trump is going to get more money for the border.”
