‘Ted, you’re a legend’: Jimmy Kimmel’s latest potshot at Ted Cruz backfires bigtime

When virulently anti-conservative late night host Jimmy Kimmel dissed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in a skit this week, the recently reelected senator reminded him that two can play that game. Except, wouldn’t you know it, Cruz happens to be a lot better at it.

The brief back-and-forth exchange began Tuesday when Kimmel ran a skit that depicted him speaking with God about a Satanic sculpture that was recently placed at the Illinois state capitol in Springfield. The comedian specifically wanted to know whether God wanted the statue removed.

“Removed? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I’m fine with it. Me and Satan, we’re cool.  … We made up,” God (played by comedian Billy Crystal) said before inviting Satan (played by musician Dave Grohl) to join his conversation with the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host.

God explained to Kimmel that the two meet up regularly to eat lunch together and determine which recently deceased folks should go to hell, and which should to heaven.

God then turned to Satan and asked, “So, uh, which one of us is gonna get Ted Cruz?”

Watch the full skit below:

Both God and Satan were so disgusted by the idea of Cruz spending the rest of eternity in their respective dominion that the two then played a game of “rock, paper, scissors” to decide Cruz’s fate.

God won, meaning Cruz gets to go to hell when he dies, of course.

Har, har, har … (sarcasm)

Was Kimmel’s skit actually funny? Judging by the responses he received on social media, only a select few thought so. In fact, as of Thursday morning his tweet had less than 1,500 likes.

Now check out how many likes Cruz’s devastating reply has received:

“Really getting into the Christmas spirit, Jimmy Kimmel just aired a skit with ‘God & Satan’ arguing and eventually deciding that I should go to Hell. It’s almost as if Jimmy’s feelings are still hurt that I kicked his ass at hoops….,” the savage senator wrote in retort.

BOOM!

Over the summer the two duked it out in a one-on-one basketball game to raise money for charity. And like Cruz dutifully noted, he kicked Kimmel’s “ass.”

Watch the fun battle below:

The game was Cruz’s idea. He challenged Kimmel after the comedian went personal with a low-blow, saying that Cruz resembled a blobfish. At first Kimmel tried to weasel out of the challenge, but eventually he accepted.

And well, the results speak for themselves …

HERE’S WHAT YOU’RE MISSING …

It’s unclear whether the Texas senator actually took offense to Kimmel’s latest dig, let alone his blobfish joke. Given Cruz’s good-natured attitude, the answer is likely no.

The same cannot be said of his supporters. Just look at how they replied to Kimmel’s tweet:

Now compare these reactions to the ones Cruz received in response to his retort:

As of Thursday afternoon the senator’s tweet boasted nearly 40,000 likes and over 8,000 retweets.
